Friday Top Tip thread
show user profile  STRAT
For those of you in the UK that use the Nectar card -

In my local Tesco self serve till this morning i purchased a small amount of shopping which took up 2 bags. I accidently typed in i had 20 bags for my Nectar card points, and it accepted it, ergo upping my points tally and cash total.

Thinking forward i went into the shop 10 mins later, purchased a packet of chewing gum at the self serve again, and said i had 5000 bags of my own. and it went through. awesomeness! 5000 bags for a single packet of sweets, lol.

Either the machine or the system is at fault, but hey, 5000 points equates to around £50 or something. Food paid for for a couple of weeks, and all i do if i'm approached is complain of a faulty machine or a typo. Easy, that loop-hole is totally their problem :)

there you are, instant money saving and amassing tips for a nice warm sunny friday.

Anyone else for any else?

Dishonestly causing someone to suffer a financial loss is fraud, which is a criminal offence.
Don't do this. The fact the system may have a hole in it is unlikely to be a valid defence.

To be an offence, you have to do something dishonestly and know you are doing that thing dishonestly. I think a jury would convict as you went back a second time and made a similar "error".

You could say the same about shoplifting - hey it's not my fault the security don't check I haven't put something in my bag without paying for it.

Disclaimer: I'm not a lawyer, but I have looked into this stuff a fair bit.

I've just spoken to the Nectar people and they are very keen on contacting you. I gave them your home address and a link to this thread, I hope that's ok?

Just kiddin'

You are a modern day Robin Hood. Except that you aren't giving to the poor, don't wear tights, and probably have pretty bad archery skills and don't ride horses quite as much. Hmmm.

IMHO....

I think your typo defense would work FINE for maybe 1 or 2 offenses.....but unfortunatley if you make a habit of it you've got no way out if caught.

So I say "good job! Cool! Score!!!!!!".....but, you're done. Dont do it again. Risk is to high.

you propably wished you typed in 1.000.000 bags instead of 5000.

I'd say try a million, then contact the people at nectar if it works, tell them you found a security breach and if you're lucky you'll get a reward.

I wonder if Strat is Karl Pilkington's father?

(only 0.001% of people will get the joke there)
