free website creation tool?
show user profile  STRAT
Hi guys

I'm looking to test a personal theory in work. to do this i'd need to create a website. but in order to create this new site, it....

1) needs to be a FREE app i download and work with, or an online thingie. Then when i'm finished i can upload the new website to my own web space and edit it when i fancy. no adverts whatsoever.

2) nothing to hard or complicated. i want to make a nice effective website (a typical freelancer's site, ie, links, gallery, animations, CV etc etc). the effectiveness will (hopefully) be in my site design.

3) something that'll allow all of the above, with hopefully the option of a little Flash with simple nice roll overs or something.

Basically, i'm looking to create a website for free. something effective and not over complicated, something that'll allow me to put my ideas into a package i can upload to my own server that'll look professional and let me be creative quickly and easily. (as i say, i'm not looking to win any website awards here). likewise, presuming my own site design is good enough, it needs to be an application that'll let me be me - something that wont obviously look straight away like it was created in a freebee download web site creator.

Strange request i know, but does anything exist or can anyone suggest anything i can crack on with and look into?

thanks.

You can also learn html code and write it yourself in notepad and test it in any browser.. If you spend a day or so it will be enough to grasp key principles of html. You'll learn details as you go and get stuck and then look for the answers on-line. Not sure what are your time constraints.

Yup, I know basic HTML. My first 2 sites I wrote in HTML. I'm just looking for something a bit more advanced and 'ready-made' so to speak.

Have a hunt for "website templates". The Interwebs are littered with them. I don't know if Flash would be part of them, as you'd need Flash (spits) to edit those files.

Can it be software you are likely to already have for business? If so dunno if Frontpage(office) will do what you want

You mean part of the ms office suit ? I don't think we've got that. I wonder if ps image ready will help? Or if Open Office has similar tools?

(even the presence of Chrissy in my threads is enough to give me a warm fuzzy feeling for the rest of the night =)

/edit

Oh, and Zzuby of course :) (not as much as missy though)

yeah I mean the office suite, but I reckon you could do something with ps and image ready too, thats why it has that slice option so you can slice different bits to load quicker (I love doing little animations with image ready)

/me sends Strat some extra warm fuzzies xx

go for wordpress.

I made my pimp and visualartsite with it, you got a good admin backend, it takes a bit of php tweaking to get it like you want but there are enough tutorials around to get the hang of it.

Wordpress can do.... or:

JOOMLA

I love joomla. Install 1.5 and get your content on there. It's easy as 123 and you can download trillians of free modules, plugins and templates.

Within the cms you can edit everything, enable disable modules etc etc.

Or even have a different template every day!

I made this website in like no-time:

www.idreamto.be

but also check out other sites created by joomla. It's free, open source, easy and works as a charm!!!!

FILES
Joomla install: http://www.joomla.org/download.html

Templates:
So far the best, quick download and a nice template gallery: http://www.joomla24.com/index.php?set_albumName=album05&option=com_gallery&Itemid=6&include=view_album.php

This one is good too but you need to fill in an e-mail addy to d/l... they send you a download link: http://www.siteground.com/joomla-hosting/joomla15-templates.htm

I used Gallery2 for mine. There is a link at the bottom of my site. Had it up and running in a weekend with no clue what I was doing. Now it runs like a beast. Everything outlinks up for me as far as navigation goes. It is pretty neat stuff and has a nice robust forum.
