Foundry up for sale?
show user profile  9krausec
http://cgpress.org/archives/carlyle-group-plans-to-sell-the-foundry.html

Umm.... So they bought out Luxology and now they are looking to possibly sell The Foundry? Curious stuff for sure. Looks like they might of set themselves up to be bought out by AD? If AD bought Luxion they'd be killing Modo competition as well as gaining Nuke?

MF worthy news I figured.

Edit- "Carlyle bought the Foundry in 2011" - I didn't know The Foundry switched hands that recently either. So perhaps it's not much to worry about? Different owner, same development? No clue.

Carlyle group are fun to read about on wiki

Before they bought (invested in?) the foundry, they owned (had a large investment in?) The Mill, then sold that and bought The Foundry. I was working there around that time.

Hopefully autodesk will stay away and some other investment company will just put in cash and nothing else....

Is it just me or could anybody else almost cry at this? What`s become of the softwares and industry we know and love and have aspired to..

What the fuck is happening with these corporate umbrellas and investment cartels?

When will it end? Seriously?

Maybe just being over sentimental *shrugs* but i find it genuinely shameful.

If you can't innovate, simply buy the competition and either stop development (Softimage), or continue developing it (Maya).

The problem for me is, it`s not got ANYTHING to do with innovation, or lack of, or anything else, it`s simply profit driven..

It could be software or it could be tea or coffee to these Vogons, it`s just transfer of capital.

Here's a breakdown of Autodesk's 2015 Max investment

0.2 million Software development
5.0 million Rebranding, new icons and marketing
2.0 million Accountants dreaming up new subscription fees

This is the problem as I see it. The rush to get the next version of Max out every year seems to include one new feature that should have been a point-release and a 3rd party script integrated or badly copied.

And now Nvidia's renderer development has been taken under the wing of Autodesk, it means that Maya will see improvement, while Max is ignored in the rendering department too.

I'm glad I have nothing to do with 3D work any more. I'd be livid with Autodesk for charging so much for a barely changing product every year.

Garp: Why?

I think there are much worse things in terms of company investment than a company who are purely investing, have no impact on innovation, and then sell again.

I'm surprised its such a surprise

I'm surprised you are surprised that this is such a surprise :D (just kidding).

On a side note, looking at the situation, I don't think it's a stretch at all to say that this sale is going to be catered to AD.

Hell... I wouldn't be surprised if Modo was specifically purchased to set this sale up to AD. Make it more juicy.

@Reeves: If I read correctly, he says that he knows nothing about the matter. Yet he manages to squeeze in a rather longuish marketing pitch. His post is just saying how great MODO is.

So this is sort of related to this topic.

Does anyone know what type of keyboard this guy is using at the Fusion studio?

I want one. Serious question.

If Autodesk is lowering the price for Nuke or even includes it in the Entertainment Creation Suite, that would be really cool! :)

Then they can cancel Smoke and Flame and focus all effort on developing Nuke :)

What is it that MODO have that Max/Maya is missing? Wouldn't it be cool if all the cool MODO tools and feature were to show up in Max and Maya? :)

- Off topic -
NVIDIA is doing some really cool stuff with mental ray and iray, but they split it up so Maya gets some of the feature and Max some other, very irritating. But Maya seams to be their primary focus for developing. The new MILA shaders are available for Maya only (as far as I know), buy iray is part of 3ds Max, but only a limited version of it. The real iray have more cool features and there is a company that makes a iray-version for Maya that seams to be more full featured. Makes me sad. Sometimes it feels like I should learn Maya again, but every time I start it up I realize that I have lost to much flow and there is so much difference between Max that it gets confusing and slow to get something done :/ I love the workflow in Max in comparison to Maya.
Sorry for the Off topic I just got all fired up when Nik mentioned NVIDIA's development. Seams like there is so much potential and opportunity that AD is just ignoring/waiting out. Like they just added Dual Quaternion skinning in Max... well that technique is rather old by now and a lot more advance and interesting technologies are available, I think even Maya's new skinning method is more advance. AD are like: "Hey guys, look! We just added this 10 your old technology to our new fancy version of 3ds Max!" :P

To get back on topic a little bit... I don't mind them buying Nuke and MODO as long as they do something useful with it, like focusing development on Nuke and adding all the cool features of MODO to Max/Maya. I think I even be okay with "merging" Max and Maya into one software with all the great features in one package. Fewer softwares, less compability issues, more development focus, more development time for innovation, stability and bug fixing. Sometimes Blender seams very interesting...

/end OT-rant :P
