Folding Paper Help
show user profile  Hence
Hey there,

I want to animate folding paper, origami style triangles unfolding into squares. I have the final shape modelled (once all unfolded) but I cannot seem to figure out how to create the folds.

I have tried the bend modifier but I can't seem to rotate or move it so it will just effect one small section of the mesh.

Can anyone suggest how I would go about this? The only thing I can think of is either ALOT of morph targets or detaching each face and aligning the pivot points so no gaps appears during the folding.

Here is an image of the simple mesh I want all triangles to unfold from the square in the centre.

Slice it up at the "folds".
Then use bones.

One thing to keep in mind when doing this type of paper thing is that i reality paper "bends" at the fold so that the 2 pieces when folded on top of each other are actually on TOP of each other. When using flat planes like this in MAX.....if you fold from the seam too far you will actually get 1 piece inside the other.

I did this ages ago with 8 bend modifiers :) (1 for each fold and 1 for the curve of the paper

You should be able to do the same.

Thanks for the responses, Grotey I've tried the Bend modiferiers but (this is a very noobish question, how can you rotate the modiferier to specifically bend one section? I'm using a plane than has been extrudude to make the mesh in the picture, but what seems to happen is the bend modifer just effects the mesh as entire entity, even with upper and lower limits + direction I cannot see how to rotate and place the bend where I need it...) THis might just be me being stupid however!

Possibility,

Expand the modifier in the stack, and see if it gives you a Gizmo or Transform to move or rotate. Much like the symmetry modifier lets you move the Mirror object.

Yup as liondebt said, click the modifier itself, it'll go yellow, then you can move it to where you want it. move it above the thickness of the paper so it deosnt fold into itself.

you will also need 3 or more edges for each bend to shape properly, currently from your image you only have one edge for each fold. Unless you are sticking with zero paper thickness, in which case you can stick with one.

but if he`s got this shape.. how can he avoid bending 2 when also bending 1?

The same way to restrict ANY modifier to certain polys. Select the desired poly then add the modifier, it'll only affect the selection.

Yeah, I played around ages ago making a scroll and took me a while to figure out selecting the polys you wanted to bend would... only bend those ones allowing you to add multiple bend modifiers :3...

Might dig up that scene again
