Flipping an Orientation constraint
show user profile  briareos_kerensky
Good day everyone,

I'm completing an aricraft landing gear, and what remains is to set up hierarchies.
The model is an import from a Step file, so quite high in poly count (around 1.5 millions), and this restricts me to use contraints, as 3dsMax crashes when I try to move things that are bound to bones.

This is the model:

The main landing gear strut (green) is slaved to a helper (not shown) and commands the whole assembly; the strut swings upward.
When the green part rotates, the red part should do the same; the red part rotates upward as well.
The pivots are the black/white circles.

My problem is that when i act on the helper connected to the green part, the red part only rotates downward. I've tried to reflect all axis of the red part (or an helper bound to the red part), but without success. If I set the Orientation constraint to Local->Local the red part doesn't rotate at all.

Any ideas?

you could try to wire param the rotation of the red arm into the rotation of the helper controlling the green arm, if i read this correctly

Yeah, wire parameters are the easiest way, just chuck a minus in front of one of the expressions and press connect (plus one of the arrows, all depends on which way you wired it).

Also, it's always a good idea to make sure your local pivots are pointing the right way, this whole thing was most likely caused by you mirroring your object and not resetting the xform (and flipping the faces, though that's another issue).
