First shots from sony a850!
show user profile  Bobbyboy
Hey there
Well it has all arrived and it is awesome! :D

I bought the sony A850 with battery pack, carl ziess 135mm f1.8 lens and one of their top end flash gun. All up with a couple of extra cables and adapters cost me around $4700au I think. rrp is around $7500 so I think i did pretty well on the old ebay :D

All I can say is wow, the build quality is simply awesome! It feels just as solid as my olympus E-3 (wouldn't go washing this one off under the garden hose though) though slightly bigger and actually maybe a bit lighter (though not with the 1kg lens attached). Very nice ergonomics, where the olympus is pretty much flat sided this has finder indents and all kind of stuff! very cool :)

As far as image quality goes, I have found it very hard to get good pictures under daylight indoors, even outdoors. Even the slightest camera shake or slightest miss focus is visible at 100% with its 25mp, downsize it to something normal and things are more forgiving, but that defeats the purpose. So it is very different and I have a lot to learn with this new camera.

But anyway here are a couple of shots I took today with this combo
And I'll post up some shots of the gear tomorrow :)

100% crop from the above

Cheers

Since everyone seems so interested I thought I'd post up some pics of the gear as well :)

This is the camera, lens and flash attached to the orbis ring flash, best outdoor portrait set up ever :D

@albongino, yea, those eyes are the effect I'm going for, super sharp eyes and everything else blurred! *looks at dof and laughs manically* "more!!!!! must have more!!!" hehehe :D

@dub, yea, absolutely stunningly beautiful build quality with the ziess, everything is solid metal, even the lens hood (a replacement for the hood retails at $250!!! :S) It feels great. Best lens I have owned so far, probably on par with my other prime for image quality if not better it must out resolve that 25mp sensor!, and way better for the build quality.

@horizon, that is a orbis ring flash modifier. It channels the light from a flash gun and creates a ring flash effect. Works really well for portraits and what not! probably works good for macro too, but haven't tried it! Makes macro ring flash set ups look tiny! :D

@inxa, thanks man

Thanks Joey

Still trying to get to grips with the colors from the sony compared to my olympus

But here is a re grade of that first pic, done to resemble dr jims old film shots. Using the alien skin plug in. Not really similar, but I still liked the slight cross process effect and green tones

updated pic with edited version

Just another small edit, still playing with color film simulations

Just a bit of lens porn! :D

I was board and wanted to play around with my flashes after work, it's 2 in the morning here :S

Anyway, enjoy the porn

I know I could do this last pic better (nicer lenses up front) but am too tired.
Pictured are the leica summerlux 25mm/1.4, CZ 135/1.8, Canon FD 50mm/1.4 and Samyang 85mm/1.4 all pics shot with a zuiko 50mm/2 macro

I love primes :D

That's seriously some nice porn there :P

That reflection on the glasses could be reduced a bit, isn't it.

Great shots.
