First Computer Build
show user profile  Jock
Well after going over the options of either buying from Boxx, buying a Mac or building my own i ended up with the latter. I just couldnt really justify the extra cost unless i had more money to spend. I managed to get a really good spec for a decent price.

The fact of building it was nerve wracking to say the least but got their in the end. Had a problem where the heatsinks wouldnt fit, but a phonecall to a froendly pc shop later, and with new clips it fit perfect.

Last night managed to get the OS on so all looks good so far.

With uni finishing in a few weeks and my new computer up and running everything sorted to hit 3d running and get to a decent level and hopefully go further in the industry.

Heres the spec:

Intel D5400XS "Skulltrail" Intel 5400 eATX (Socket 771) PCI-Express FBDIMM DDR2 Motherboard
2x Intel Xeon E5420 "LGA771 Harpertown" 2.50GHz (1333fsb) 12mb-cache Processor - Retail
BFB GeForce 8800 GTS OC 512MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI (PCI-Express) – Retail
2x 4GB kit (2GBx2), 240-pin DIMM, DDR2 PC2-6400 memory module
1200W Silverstone DA1200 Modular
Sony NEC Optiarc AD-7200S 20x DVD±RW SATA Dual Layer ReWriter (Black) - OEM
2x Samsung SpinPoint F1 750GB SATA-II 32MB Cache - OEM (HD753LJ)
Lian Li PC-A71B Aluminium Tower Case – Black
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusic 7.1 Sound Card - OEM (30SB046000000)
Logitech G51 5.1 Surround Sound Speaker System (980-000116)

Hah, your cable management is almost as messy as mine! My flatmate is real nitpicky about these things, and lectures me on it everytime I open my case up. You should see his though, it's neater than folded undies I tells thee.

Looks good.

Where did you buy the parts?
is that a dual processor rig?

yeah, skulltrail is a dual xeon rig that was built for the 771 qx9770 chip
it's uber coz it can also handle SLi which makes it a gamers wet dream
much too expensive to build with those chips though, seeing intel has an impressive release line-up of chips holding up to 8 (or even 12) cores

jock made the right choice imo

i see a 1200w psu though, not 1000
let me know if the chipset fan really makes that much noise
i read in reviews its a bitch

Yeah sorry, had to change the psu at the last minute because you need two specific connections, one for each cpu. Mustnt have updated my list.

1200W Silverstone DA1200 Modular is what i got.

The parts i bought from both OCUK and Scan depending which were cheapest. Had some real issues with scan saying stuff was in stock when it wasnt but didnt have to wait too long.

And yeah I'll let you know about the fan.

In fact the cpu is out of date too, had to get the next one up as it was in stock

Oh and the RAM waas from crucial as it needs fully buffered RAM which was harder to get hold of and more expensive.

How much has all this set you back? I'd love to build a new machine again, but unfortunately my next upgrade for a looong time is just to pop in a quadcore.

... maybe more ram too...

... ... and SLI graphics...

... ... ... and another 22" monitor

... ... ... ... and a different case.

*checks bank account*

Mmm, maybe just the quadcore for now.

Whole thing cost about £2k. I did get some extras that bumped it up a bit more but they were just treats because i was already forking out a pile of money. When i compare it to the pre-built machines i was quoted, there was about £1k-2.5k difference.

I might be way behind things but last time I checked those two couldn't be in a same rig. As stupid as it sounds, SLI mode couldn't operate 2 monitors. Did this change finally?

That's pretty tasty, when I built my machine sometime last year (might've been late 2006 actually). it set me back about £1200, and is probably under half the spec of what you've got there. Still running that very same machine, she's had a few upgrades... but nothing major.

Edit
Horizon: I've never heard of that. Running dual monitors now just on one, how do people get three monitor setups?

MY flatmate used to run SLI with dual monitors, though I don't know if he was using one monitor for one card, or two monitors on one.

I have no idea Dave, it was just something I heard long time ago.

Anyone that can confirm what is and was true for certain?

That is almost an identical setup to what I'm getting myself.
Ordering it through avadirect.com for warranty purposes and because it is done through a company that I'm billing for webdesign.

5405 cpus, less sound, 550W psu, less 1 hd - total of $2,500

Nice machine. I was going to buy myself something similar, but in the end ordered a Mac Pro.
It is not far off that spec and not far off that price either.

It has 2x 2.8Ghz xeon quads, Geforce 8800 GT 512 Mb, 2x1Gb EEC FB-DIMM pre-installed + 2x2GB third party, 320Gb Sata2 pre-installed, 2x500Gb Sata2 drives third party. The mac (including student discount), extra ram, extra hard drives, and windows cost just under £2000.

Like you, I also had to track down fully buffered Ram, it is hard to find, but I bought this in the end designed specifically for mac-pros:http://www.allmacshop.co.uk/?page=proddetail&prod=65085.
Comes with an uber heatsink, it will be some cool ram.

What OS did you put on your machine? U got it up and runing yet?

Yeah i was following your thread at the time Liz. At the time i was all over the place, I had made up my mind to buy from Boxx, then decided i was getting a Mac, then finally ended up building it. I seriously considered MAC the only problem i had is that i know even less about them than i do PC's and i couldn’t really get my head round that for what i wanted i'd essentially be buying a mac to use as a PC.

I know theres loads of arguments for and against, though not knowing very much about computers a lot of it was lost on me, so thought id best stick to what i knew.

the OS is vista 64x which i know a lot will say is daft but i just thought id give it a bash, and if worst comes to the worst i'll get another OS. I know a few who have it with no huge problems so hoping for the best.

I haven’t had it up fully, i didn’t finish till 1am this morning, though the last thing i done was successfully install vista so things (touch wood) are looking good so far. Tonight i'll get all the drivers and apps put on.
