Finalising the AC Ace
show user profile  herfst1
I'm about to render these into an animation for my portfolio and I thought, once again, I should get any feedback.

NOTE: This is an AC Ace but isn't an exact replica as I chose to replace the nose with an AC Cobra's and I also took off the roll-bar as I thought it looked stupid. I know it's not good form but, hey.

Any and all crits are welcome.

According to the reference pictures they are. Of course the reference pictures might be off. I'll do a quick compare with some of the photo's I collected. Note that the car is really small in real life.

P.S. thanks for pointing that out.

So I checked everything and it looks like the reference pictures over-exaggerated the width of the wheels. Otherwise, the diameter looks okay. I will shrink them down a touch. Oh, and, yes, I realise the tire tread is all wrong but I couldn't find any schematics for the original tire so I chose this chunky one instead.

The tire size is ok in my opinion , but it's not right as model .The corner of it need to be much smoother , some rounded shape , or something .

Congrats, you found my signature.

Thanks Silard. Yeah, you're right, it was my first proper attempt at tire modeling and I never tapered the thread at the edges so it was near impossible to created the sides leading into the hub as one piece - so I faked it. I've decided to throw it away and start again - right move as I've nearly finished.

I remodeled the tire, made it thinner and rounder on the sides plus a less defined tread.

Car looks OK. Have another go at the headlight shader. The index of refraction looks to high causing the glass to appear very thick. also, I think the new tires look much better but the more defined tread was better in my opinion. Maybe Tone down the body reflection on the car paint just a tad. You can also see in your wires you modeled the shape of the doors but you cant see it at all in the renders. you should make separation between doors and body more visible. will ad a lot of realism to this model.

Looking at the back of the car, the rear fenders over the wheels don't look like they are high enough or round enough.

Great model so far looks like a fun project.

@ ccampbell

You mean I have to model the tires a THIRD time? :)

I will definitely do what you suggest and create a ridge between the doors, boot and bonnet. I actually wasted a few hours remodeling all the edge joints (using create shape from spline) so that it would be a perfect fit. Oh well.

I'll look into the rear fender but it could just be the camera angle.

P.S. I am REALLY wanting to create an HDRI reflection but don't have any panoramic photographs nor that VUE program. If anyone has a spare photo that they will never use, or knows where I can download one (or create one myself), please let me know.

Hi there. I think the tyres are the least of your worries. If you put this in your portfolio in its current state all it will show is that you can model somewhat and that your materials, lighting and rendering are very basic.

I'd suggest finding a photo of a cobra that you like, then try to copy it exactly. You'll learn so much and your images will really shine. Analyse everything, work out what makes something look real, it sounds like a mission and it is, but you'l benefit from it immensely.

After all, the purpose of images in a portfolio are to showcase your skills. At the moment I'd concentrate more on skills and less on showing ;)

Did a quick test render with reflections, some basic lighting, and integrated it in photoshop just to test what's what. Yes I have to fix the materials and work on some of the modeling (like the front grill, add some wipers, fix the tires, etc.) but I don't see any reason to start over. Of course, if I ever model a second car, it will be better and I will amend my portfolio then but right now I need a car so this will have to do.

Okay, worked on the fine details, materials, rendering and three-point lighting as Mashedpot8er suggested I do. I think it looks a lot better. Let me know if anything stands out.

P.S. I just saw that the left door was left open, in case anyone wonders why it looks wierd. And I still have to model the inside of the engine compartment (but probably not the engine).
