Final Gather & Materials

Final gather maps are dependent on the resolution at which you render them - or so I have learned from tutorials. But do they also depend on the materials in the scene? Can I, for instance, creating a final gather map when I've got a plain material in the material override slot, and then use it in my scene once I've decided on my materials, and still expect to get decent results?

Any help gratefully received!

it would probably work but you'd miss out on a lot of accuracy due to varying reflective glossiness on your real materials which FG eats

Thanks Stabby - that's what I suspected. I'm also betting that an opaque material in the override slot would therefore mean that the fg would look dreadful when simulating areas of glass or other transparency. I'm just trying to fill in the mental blanks of how GI works. You've been very helpful.
