Externa e-sata storage for projects and working
show user profile  soontekk
Hi folks, i am planning to excommunicate most of my storage outside of my workstation to be able to make it more portable and free it from my wks so when i'm upgrading it is something i should not worry about. My wks will only have system disks, caches, swap ssd's etc, maybe a backup disk for fast backups internally but that's it.

Anyone working like this and what is your setup. Does a 5 bay e-sata house suffice ?
I was thinking something like these:

or can i use something like a synology diskstation (nas) as external storage (i would suspect not) ?

This raid system looks ok, but since it's in German I can't read into its spec. What kind of raid does it do? 0,1,5?
I can't say I have ever worked this way you want, but personally I had bad experience with esata (always dropped the connection), I would much rather use the usb3 if you have it supported in your system.
I guess your supposed setup does have some advantages as you said, but also some disadvantage since all the data Will transfer through a single esata or usb3 connection. While on a regular system each drive has its own esata connection. But this is relevant only if you need to work with several drives simultaneous.

Kurt - I work this way.

Esata (if properly installed) is the way to go. Each Esata port is a dedicated connection. USB is a shared connection.

I use G-Technologies products.
I have a SSD as my main system drive.
I have another SSD as my Adobe Cache drive
I then have an Gtech esata RAID 0 as a primary project drive
Also another Gtech RAID 0 as a primary media drive.
I then use a USDB 3 WD 8TB RAID 1 as a nightly backup for the 2 RAID 0's.

Great speed,(for video and project well as the Adobce Cache files and database on SSD with zer lag access time)...and nightly backups with redundancy should a RAID zero fail.
Everything is on it's own channel,.....and the nightly backup over USB 3 is fine since the machine is either idle or rendering.

Hey Joel, indeed it does raid everything but i'm not even sure i need that. I do nightly backups like Jim via a NAS (wired but not usb3 = too slow so i'll change that as well). I always have a dedicated disk that i use to do manual backups of running projects anyway.

And since system ssd's and caches are still in the main wks traffic has been derived from the project drives so even if it is shared it will still be doable in my case. I actually am running some projects from a usb3 drive, only trouble is the startup sometimes.

Thanks Jim, now i'm confident this setup is the way to go. I'll order the sharkoon raid block and some 4tb wd green disks to get me going.

Thanks guys!

Never heard of that.
But if the product has a manual maybe look for it online and have a look in there

Nope, downloaded the manual, they mention the modes and how to activate them but thats it. Must be some custom modes or so..
