Error using my GPU in render
show user profile  Davious
Hi all,

It has been a seriously long time since I posted here and hope you are all well. I havent used Max for years so feel like I'm starting to drive again. Please forgive m noob questions but I'm out of the loop and have reset my knowledge :)

I have a 'new' PC bought from a friend - win 7, I-7 6 GB, nvidia 580 with 4 GM memory.

I was playing with Iray - built a very simple scene - plane with a teapot and 2 lights - scene renders fine but when I switch on the GPU for that additional speed I get errors. Mostly CUDA device failed or failed to get memory from device. I did actually get it to work once and dropped my render time from 120 to 11 seconds. You can see why I'd like to get it working. Any ideas ? I did google it but nothing conclusive. (@bolts yes I know - should be using Vray )

Unrelated - any reason why I can't scale a UVW gizmo? I added one to a box, I can move and rotate it but not scale it. Thanks

Hi to anyone who remembers me and to all the new people !

Dave

Are you sure it's got 4GB of memory? The reviews say 1.5.

Does it render my iRay test scene? It sounds like it's running out of memory on your render.

And hey, of course we remember you!

Hi Nik,

---------------
Display Devices
---------------
Card name: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 580
Manufacturer: NVIDIA
Chip type: GeForce GTX 580
Display Memory: 4047 MB
Dedicated Memory: 1487 MB
Shared Memory: 2559 MB

also loaded that test file

From first load up - produced some errors in the iray reporting window then crashed max. So re loaded and ran without the GPU 2 mins 12 secs - then ran with GPU and all was well - took 27 seconds. I suspect the memory or the paging is somewhat borked. I got the PC off a mate second hand and don't know it's history. Anyhows the scene now renders -- I'll try my own again and see what happens.

Also - I still have this :

Ha ha, I remember that!

I presume you have the latest drivers, etc?

Its still got 1.5gb of memory, "shared" memory is what it can borrow from system memory but its very slow(because its far away over the pcie bus and is governed by a controller thats optimized for different kinds of access). I'm not sure whether iray allows its use (by default its enabled to avoid crashes in major gpu related API's) but either way, when gpu rendering and it spills over the onboard memory you're screwed.
