Bought.

Get it now and use it before it gets horribly abused.

Saw a video the other day and it looked impressive, might take away a some of C4D's motion graphics market? Maybe.

okay, someone has to fill me in on this openGL stuff.. That demo Kramer showed was amazing. The quality was very good (better than any of my renders ever) and the speed of performance was brilliant! He said it wasn't a raytrace render though, so raster based? Raster vs Raytrace, do I really care if raster looks like that?

Someone please tell me the pitfalls of using this, importing the models into AE and never waiting to render for the most part again?

I watched this last night and was blown away frankly..

It`s almost exactly what i was hankering after with this thread:

http://www.maxforums.org/threads/random_rant_renderers_utilise_game_tech/0001.aspx

Although integrated inside the 3d application itself.

The obvious disadvantages with this are of course VRAM limitations and keeping a lid on poly counts etc, baking mesh`s and textures, and i think the introduction video said it`s not possible to import animated content.. But for what it is, it`s pretty bloody incredible..

In terms of C4D i think it`ll actually leverage more users dealing with motion graphics exclusively through C4D and AE - as apparently it supports C4D format..

Amazing, about fucking time seriously..

You take is interesting SD....

I liken this more to 'realtime' OGL based 3D system used for broadcast like VizRT and Ross's Xpression,...WASP...etc.

OGL CAN do some amazing things,...and since this (ELement) is NOT "real time" then it can do even more since we aren't freaking out if a screen redraw takes 1 second (which is 30 X real time).

After playing with it for about 1.5 hours I think it has major potential to be a timesaver for some of us,....and ofcourse to also pollute the mograph industry with a ton of crappy 3D.

I brought in my "Tranny Snail" model of about 250K polys,.....I exported as OBJ, then imported into AE. It kept all my UV's and also my MATS. I just quickly tossed some preset materials into the various groups and went about playing randomly with lighting settings,.....environment map settings...etc.
It spun that model around with full lighting, AE and such without blinking. I will say I wish MAX viewport was THIS friggin nice looking!

More to come......

it's cute and seems very useful for certain things... jimmy boy; i'd really appreciate a video of something you put together.

i'd be happy, to um.... re-imburse you for it.

Will do...lol. I am dedicating some time to it this morning.

Another thing it does which will be majorly abused is that it has built in extrusion/beveling for AE's internal type generator as well as any imported EPS artwork.
That function ofcourse is nowhere near REAL modelling.....but for logo's and such....it will be used ALOT.

So in a quick, haven't read the Help files yet 10 minutes I:
Shot some random video with my Iphone of the office,...making sure to orbit and such.

Imported Vid into AE
Created type, 3D extrude, bevels..etc.
Assigned metallic material (yes, in AE)....
Set video as environment map for reflection.
3D TRACKED footage.
Put 3D type into position,.....
Set up AE lights into position of lights in footage to properly affect type
Set proper DOF
Set 3D motion blur
And did a ram preview in like 1 minute of 5sec that blew my mind

EDIT: This mornings text scene will be ESPECIALLY for you Boltsy!

bought it, first impressions -> quite limited animationwise but not complaining about the progress towards AE 3d capabilities. It's fun for simple mograph stuff but compared to let's say trapcode form in terms of using custom layers to drive parameters it's limited to none.

can't wait to see dr. jim bevelling some sexy text...
