Do I need After Effects CS5 for basic video editing
show user profile  GirishDJoshi
Hey,

I have After Effects CS4 as of now. I have some hd videos from an outing and I want to edit them and create a video with colors and other simple effects. A bit of roto if needed.

Is there any need of CS5 for it. Or CS4 is good enough.

Download a trial and see for yourself.
CS3 to CS4 I believe was a relatively big interface change for the whole adobe package, but in general, as with all products coming out each year or so, there isn't so much difference between the 2 in a row

CS5 only runs on 64 bit if that makes any difference for you.

your post title mentions you want basic video editing. well, any AE version does that, and does it very very well.

I always say everything beyond 3 minutes edit you better use something like premiere in combination

Okay.

I have a video am working on. It should overall be around 4-5 minutes or so. Landscapes, close ups, little macros etc.

It more like a learning for me.

So basically it would be,

- editing / clipping, keeping the necessary part of the video
- little bit of text + motion tracking
- color correction
- magic bullet, later on in the stage.
- basic roto, in the beginning.

Okay, so what do you think.

How does Premiere fit into this.

Kb - the snail updated video with the text on snail (if I remember correctly) what and how was it done.

Edit in Editing app

THEN export only the shots that need VFX work. Do the VFX work in AE.

Bring back into Editing app.

Done.

(*Note: Work in uncompressed format for above...only compress on final output from edit app depending on needs)

(Note#2* IF by chance you use premiere,.....premiere and AE are integrated and can share timline data...etc. This makes it a bit easier.....but not too important for such a short piece)

Okay. But I don't have premiere. Should I be getting that for the editing part.

So, I have used Sony Vegas in the past...

Sony vegas to edit then export the clips as mov .. (am I right)
then in Ae do the vfx export them as mov's again
Back to Vegas, final export.

Am I right.

you are right

you certainly dont NEED premiere.

Just keep in mind when you export/reimport your Qtimes to not use any compression. (well...animation compressor would be fine).

Has anyone experienced any problems with importing straight Premiere project files into AE? When I did it a few times I got skipping.
