Edit a rigged character

I'm new to the world of 3D and am trying to play around with a few free models I've found on the net.
I have this rigged character that I'd like to edit using 3D Studio - I'd like to add fur to everywhere but the face.

The problems is, I can't select certain parts of the model only, it's either all or nothing.
I've tried converting to an editable poly, but when I do that the rigging no longer works.

Is there a way I can edit a fully rigged model without destroying the rigging?

second you can change the vertex positions as much as you want but changing topology is more tricky because skin assigns weights based on vert ID which will change and it wont find them again based on location. There is a sort of workaround by editing the mesh in a separate clone object and then merging that into the base mesh while deleting the old one, it mostly works but requires tweaking the skin to get it working right again.
