How do you edit different levels of the modifier stack, without messing everything else up?

One question I've been meaning to ask for a while (as its been causing me some unrest lol), is how you move to different modifiers in the stack, without messing up everything ABOVE (or sometimes below) the modifier you clicked on.

This has been mostly happening with the "Unwrap UVW" modifier. I'll make my UV map (sometimes taking well over an hour), then I'll create the lightmap UV, and I'm ready to export. However, sometimes I need to check the original UV map, but in doing this, I have to move to another level of the stack, which gives you that warning message "Yes, hold yes, or no". I click yes, but usually when I do this, I find that my UV map has been completely screwed up.

How do you prevent this from happening?

Collapse the unwrap modifier into the stack. that effectively bakes the UVs into the model rather than keeping them in a modifier to lose later. If you need different UV layouts in the same model then use mapping channels. you can have as many different layouts in the same model as you want.

Thanks man! If I need to edit the UV's again, is it just a case of creating another UV modifier, and it will adopt the UV's that I collapsed into the model?

Yep, exactly. The UV's will remain constant to the model. Of course if you add or delete geometry then expect changes in the UV, so only complete this stage when you are sure you won't need to remodel.

Check out The Life of a Sea Turtle - there's a damn good UVW tutorial in there.
