Economic Climate Trouble
show user profile  Jock
Hows everyone else doing in these crappy times?

We had it anounced yesterday that we are getting a 25% pay cut and a 5th round of redundancies, soon theres going to be no one left! Also their language has changed from 'troubles' to 'crisis' so it doesnt bode well especially considering everyone is in the same boat and therefore to find another job may prove extremely difficult.

Anyone else experiencing problems at their workplace?

we've been on a 20% cut since january this year, but the phone's been ringing a lot more this last month or 2, and last month we went back up to full pay with overtime too.

it's a shitty business at the mo, and all you can do is try to hang on in there.

Our workforce has halved in size since some crazies flew a couple of airliners into some buildings. GW Bush needed so much cash for his war against "satan's demons" that education took a massive cut.

The game industry is hurting right now, tons of layoffs and studios closing down - and we're supposedly one of the strongest sectors of the economy!

Personally I don't think the economic crash can be blamed on Usama or W. Bush, regardless of my opinion of both of them. I may be getting myself into trouble here, but the real problem seems to be widespread theft and corruption in the financial sector and "satan's cronies" in government helping them get away with it. Bush's tax cuts cost the US nearly as much as the Iraq war...

I've been pretty much jobless for about two months or more recently (with a one-day-a-week gig at £80 a day tiding me over), though recently I've had a bunch of stuff come up so maybe I've made it out of this particular mini tough period.

The biggest problem has been my own lack of motivation, though. :[

Quite right, but in the education sector in the US, the spending on education was cut to finance the war. The economy as a whole was screwed by greedy investment bankers and is a totally seperate issue.

oh I thought you were making a generalization about lack of skilled labor contributing to our economic woes....or something...didn't realize you were in education : D

Work for me is really quiet compared to last year. Last year I was pretty well off and this year scraping by. We did allot of in-branch stuff for RBS/Natwest so that pretty much explains that. I'm really trying to crack on with folio stuff for the company but I find it tough to keep motivated.

No wories Matty. I did realise after I posted that I was slightly off topic, as education and the economy have seperate problems.

Yes - which is exactly why Labour put Universities in the Business Department !
We don't even have a Dept. of Education any more do we ?
It was "children, schools & families" last time I looked.

"They need uneducated people to fight a war against satan because only uneducated people believe in satan"... or something.

Personally, I believe that this "economy crisis" wouldn't have gone this bad if it wasn't for media blowing it up in to rediculous proportions, making everyone worried and scared shitless to sell all their stock and cancel their bank accounts and what not.
It could have been handled a lot smoother if it wasn't for mass media who makes a business out of scaring people.

The media had nothing to do with banks lending money to people who couldn't afford to pay it back.

Evil is very real. Put whatever name you like on it.

The global economic problem is the result of many factors and many bad decisions by many individuals. It is a problem far too complex to rightly place the blame on one person or group. This American Life (great radio program in general) did a series of shows that explain the causes of the problem in clear entertaining ways.

Start here:

then here:

and here:

and finally:

Each show is about an hour long and very interesting. This American Life also does a good job of presenting the info without bias (political or otherwise).

The podcast in general comes highly recommended as well.
