Unlink everything, go to the utilities panel and reset xform on all objects then collapse all the stacks and re-link.

It's probably cleanest for you to get into the practice scaling object's components rather than the objects transforms, as obviously there are lots of weird things it can cause that you might not want.

Unlink everything Select all the objects Go to the utilities panel
Click reset xform click reset selected right click all the objects and choose convert to editable poly.
During the rpocess you have at some point scaled one or more object in only one or two axes at a time causing the scale factors for x,y&z for the object to be different to each other. This difference gets magnified after linking to another object and cuases that odd scaling problem. Resetting the xform puts their scale values back to 100 for x,y&z.
To stop this happening in the future only ever scale objects at element level rather than object level. Or just get into the habit of resetting the xform on everthing before you link anything for animation.

Grote:
I've been doing this for years, knowing that alterations in non uniform scale were usually the culprit, but never understood until now the magnification effect at work when I went to manipulate / animate - I just assumed shit was wonky / max was being max and followed the steps to fix it.
It's like a small, dim bulb has glowed to life inside my brain. :|
thanks.

On a similar note, we basically never animate/scale any geometry, always nulls and parent the objects to them. Safety.
