dome background vs HDRI for env.
show user profile  albongino
hi there guys,

so I'm planning to fly a camera around this exterior I'm doing, the thing is a lot of horizon will be shown, and a background plate wont be enough, so I tried the dome technique but it has a drastic effect on environment lighting, and using hdri for environment map does the 360 degrees but it displays very blurry no matter how sharp the actual hdr is...

anyone knows an effective way to achieve this? any input would be great.

use a dome for the visual sky, and a hdr for the actual light. In vray, you can uncheck generate GI for the dome, so you can have 100% self illumination on the dome, and the scene renders the same. I'm sure there is something similar in mentalray

genius, I'll try that.. and I'm using Vray..

one question.. won't the dome block environment GI from going into it? ie. wouldn't it cast shadow to the whole scene and block the HDR light from going in except from the bottom??

no. I tried it. just uncheck "genererate GI" (render settings/system/object settings), and use a dome light with a vray hdr map as texture.
In any case, you can disable shadow casting for the dome

thanks AB,

I was gonna try the shadow casting unchecking too, should have known it would apply also for environment lighting.. I'll work on it..

[edit] well, the shadow casting uncheck doesn't work.. the dome is blocking environment light to go through it... will do it with vray dome light...
