DOF problems
show user profile  VKotek
I am using mental ray, and when I render, but I get a DOF error message and the picture comes out strange.

MSG 0.0 error: bitmap expected unsupported GBuffer channel "transparency"
MSG 0.0 error: bitmap expected unsupported GBuffer channel "weight"
MSG 0.0 error: "Depth of Field" effect expected unsupported GBuffer channel "transparency"
MSG 0.0 error: "Depth of Field" effect expected unsupported GBuffer channel "weight"

notice the edges

If there is no way of avoiding this, is ZDepth any good? or what do you guys suggest?

Yes you can.

Render out the Z-depth (found in Render Elements) and save it as a separate file. Then open both your render and your Z-depth in Photoshop and create a new channel (which will be named Alpha 1 by default) and paste the Z-depth image in there.. Then use Filters / Blur / Lensblur and select Alpha 1 as the source.

Lead: Thanks! Texture is from 3D Total Textures "clean textures" CD, they are excelent

Undersky: I am stuck on the blur, I have this so far:
the blur allows me to choose from Blur by transparency or by mask only

No, you shouldn't do a new layer, but a new channel... Change to your channel palette.

The PS approach is just like the render effect you're trying to use, it's 2D blur... You will get some problems around the edges of your teapot. There might be more problems, there might be less, but you will face some problems.

The best thing to do, of course, is raytraced dof, but it will take much longer time to get it noise-free.

vkotek not sure if you've completely got the method, i just thought id put it in black and white

1. render a zdepth pass adjusting the near and far values to get a nice gradual distance between the near and far objects. yours has a very short fade behind the teapot

heres one i did for my garlic press, notice the gradual fade

2. save both the image and zdepth

3.open both files in ps and put the zdepth as a new layer on top of the image

4. go to the channels tab, and Ctrl-left click the rgb channel to create a selection based on the white area shown

5. click 'save selection as channel' at the bottom of the channels tab

6. Deselect the selection.

7. turn off the zdepth layer and select the image layer

8. filter-->blur-->lens blur

9. in the window click the point at which you want the image to be in focus

10.choose alpha 1 (or whatever the new alpha channel was called) in the source dropdown box

11. adjust the radius value to increase/decrease the amount of blur

I'm using Photoshop 7 at this time, and cannot find the lens blur under my blur filters.
I have Blur, Blur More, Gaussian Blur, Motion Blur, Radial Blur and Smart Blur. Is the Lens Blur something that's available in only the new Photoshop?

Yea....lens blur didn't come with version 7.

However you can try Mr.Drapers method.

Yup, PS 10 has the filter, and it works like a charm. It was about time to upgrade anyway.
