Well I am sure from the many people that have been viewing my recent posts and helping me out have probably been wondering what I am up to. I am sure that many of you have seen me working on a gold texture. I have spent the better part of today working on it using the help of a few people and experimenting on my own. Though many helped i still did not get the desired effect.
I have been working on a scene and the only texture that i am having problem with was the gold texture everything else turned out okay. Some of you said that i should round off the gold and it would help it look better. But once you see my scene you will under stand why i didn't.
Here is the gold texture that came the closest to my wants and needs. Killerbee was the one that helped me obtain this texture by providing a file for me. Note to KB: I replaced the images that you had for the bump map and the reflective map (if my memory suits me right) And it didn't really come out horrible but its no where near great. (i must have done something wrong)
Here is the image:
I like the way that the sides of the piece of gold turned out but not the top. It's got the bumps which i don't want and the reflection doesn't look right because of that.
Those of you that have seen my model of my cat will recognize this. This is obviously the scene where i am using the gold piece as a plack piece. And it just wouldn't look right if it were curved.
Here is the scene:
How do you like it? I made the texture for that cat the eyes and the wall. You allready know the story of the gold.
I was going for a polished granite look for the cats head and a jade look for the eyes. The wall doesn't look that great i know but i don't think its that bad.
So how can i improve on my textures.
And where is that "really good lighting" button. :-) Just kidding. I know the light is bad how can i improve it.
I am pretty sure that its a target spot light. And thats about it. I know nothing of lighting so I might have to learn it on my own because if you try to tell me to try something i won't even know what your talking about.
All right i know that its nothing spectacular. But how do you think it is for some one who has been using max since February.
Also i wanted once i got the gold texture right to do like an engraving type on the gold.
When i created the letters via max text i changed them to an editable poly. Then whenever i try to extrude them it never stays a whole shape. Even when i would be done making the letters how could i perform a boolean operation and still have a solid hole in the shape of the letters sunken into the gold.
Well there probably is an easier way but I don't know it so please tell me a way that i could accomplish this.
Just incase you might ask i have 3ds max 8 and i DON'T have anything like V-ray or any of those special plugins.
I know that was alot but please help me in anyway that you can.
Thanks in advance, Colin
P.S. if you wanted to see my original thread with the cat model here it is.

The wood shelf looks really dark...on my monitor. The granite looks all shiny but I can't see reflections. For basic lighting advice ...google for a '3 point lighting' tut.
You will have to learn to use GI ...sooner or later.Mental ray does a good job but is bit complicated. Try assigning Mental ray renderer - put in a skylight and turn on final gather (indirect illumination tab in the render rollout, then add other light with shadows on.
You could also google for 'e-light script' which fakes GI.

i think my main point would have to be perspective, i dont really know anything about composition but i just doesnt look quite right.
i think maybe you need to align one of the planes of the object with that of the image.
im about to start learning texturing and im not looking forward to it :( keep plugging.
i dont know about the engravings sry, only things i can think of are booloeans (:-S) or bump maps. Id be curious to see what other peoples say
[edit] p.s. im not certain but i think once you've got the basic materail right the quality of a gold material depends hugely on the quality of lighting

oh, it's a cat ?
seriously, work on the lighting, would improve alot allready, maybe first take a simple grey material for now instead of those materials.

It doesn't look interesting, try to make it more attractive, maybe add the shadow of a window on it, other surrounding objects etc. Do some searching on google images of interiors, look at how lighting works inside etc.
No need for three point lighting in this case, think how your room's lighting setup is and recreate that for a start.
Also make the point of view more interesting and balanced.

TO RADIC: because i am a n00b and i just learned about that stuff like 3 days ago. I didn't even know max came mental ray or even what it was.
UPDATE:
I added a camera cause i realized its not in perspective. I also added candles but how do i go about adding materials to the candles since its all one piece.

1) Look up some tutorials on basic 3-point lighting. One light will look too flat.
http://www.3drender.com/light/3point.html http://www.mediacollege.com/lighting/three-point/ http://www.andrew-whitehurst.net/3point.html
2) look into the light settings. Your shadow map is a default (low or 512) resolution. You can crank that up higher to make it sharper and even change the color.
I have a handout on light settings :
http://schultzeworks.com/PDFs/MAX-shortcuts.pdf
Alll my other handouts are on the main tutorial page

Nice work for a week of practce! Keep it up, dude.

Oh thanks for the complement. Yeah i guess that i have been spending alot of time in Max. I have almost completed one book on it and tons of other tutorials.
Yeah i had no idea what you were talking about when you said a few days. I percieved that maybe you thought that i had been using max for litteraly a few days. Wow now wouldn't that be an accomplishment. To bad i couldn't learn everything i know now in the short period of time.
Thanks goes to MAXFORUMS for pushing me to try harder.
EDIT: Radic i went to your sight but how do you enter it. I clicked all over the screen and nothing happened.
