Distorted Bitmaps
show user profile  K u r a i
When I apply a wood bitmap to this worktop the grain is distorted.

What causes this?
And how do I avoid this?

Search on youtube for a "Uv mapping" or "UVW unwrapping" tutorial.

Thanks... obviously, it's become distorted when I was playing around with it to fit the sink.

I have Max 2015. Will I still be able to open Max 2014 files?
Reluctant to install it until finished project.

Yes, you can open older files. And also save as older formats. And you can click "preserve uvs" if you're going to do minor vertex moving on an already mapped surface, though I wouldn't recommend it, use the cut tool instead.

Its a bloody work surface - cubic map it.

in my profession i rarely use uvw. get a good hi-res tiling texture and use other mapping types. maintains quality without giving constant headaches and the time and faffing that come with it.

I use Arroway Texture and CG Source. Good stuff. The same happens. On the far right next to the sink it's distorted. Maybe cos I used ProBoolean to make holes.

What is Cubic Map?

Also, I want to change my: 3Ds max Folder on my desktop that has all my maps and stuff in to another drive. Can someone give me very clear instructions on how to re-config path.

Thanks.

Underlying mesh is distorting the uv's, just planar map it.

Add a UVW Map modifier and set to box. Done.

When you guys talk to me...please try to remember that I am an idiot!!! And know fuck all :)

Can someone give me a link that shows how to overcome this.... or should I re-do the worktop again to fix the distorted mesh.

BTW FX.... I had a look at the Outliner Script... too complex... ended up not using it. There is another script, but you have to pay... so I thought might as well get Max 2015.... which has revamped the layer system.

Yes it has...but it's shit, they took PJanssen's ideas, rejected his offers of being involved in the development and implemented his script....badly.
I only hope PJanssen decides to continue development and show AD how it should be done, like he has been doing for the last 5 years.

I always wonder about this...I notice if a script gets popular AD bring it out in their next version.... and I always wondered if they work with the script writers or rip them off.

It's like that guy (there's a film about it) that invents the 'intermitant windscreen wiper' in his garage and gets ripped of by Ford Moters... has a nervous breakdown, loses his wife and family as a result and spends most of his life fighting it in court... good news is...he won the court case and was awarded $20 million.

One script that I think will make it to 2016 is the "Guidelines" script. It should have been in Max No1.
Sketchup is brilliant cos of the measuring tool system which is the best there is. This will help alot if they combined it with measuring units too.I often need guides to plot things like ceiling light.

Can anyone help with the other question I had... about changing the path of my 3Ds Max folder on my desktop to another drive?
