Dirt Map Glitch. Something strange is going on
show user profile  Justin101
Hey all,

I am rendering an external house in 3ds max 2015 with Vray 3.0 and have added a render element.
I have added a VrayExtraTex to render an ambient occlusion type dirt map along side the normal render to help add more depth to the shadows. The only problem is that once the render is done, it saves both the normal render and the VrayExtraTex Dirt map render seperately, but for some reason the second dirt map render is a black and whit mess. It looks nothing like the scene, but more like a bad tv signal with nothing but black and white pixels. Fortunately the dirt map render appears on the screen which can be saved over the horrible glitch save, but I see this will eventually be a problem when I start doing multiple net renders.

Does anyone know why the saved file is all glitchy, but the render that pops up on screen once the render is complete is fine? I save as either a TGA or PNG file.

Any help would be much appreciated.

If you added two extra passes named extratex, the second will overwrite the first. So make sure you name them uniquely.

I only added one render element which is the VrayExtratex and to the textures map,
I added a Vray Dirt to give me a second render with deeper shadows.

Below is a screen capture. The top left is the final render and blow that is the dirt map that appears if I tick Rendered Frame Window. Both files render fine, but I believe it is the saving which is the problem. I set a render output folder and only the normal coloured PNG render saves fine, but for some reason the second "dirt" render saves as the very bottom left image which you can see is all pixelated. In the middle, you can see the Render elements that I have selected for the second "dirt" render element pass.

I can manually save the dirt pass over the pixelated one in the render frame window, but I plan to do multiple renders using net render so that is no good. I just gotta get the second pass to save correctly. Any help would be much appreciated.

Your not using the VFB which is what you should do.
Enable it in the VRAY tab somewhere on the top.
Also, under your render passes under selected element parameters, untick enable. You already enabled it at the top(elements active). Dont use this tickbox.
Good luck :)

Thanks but I tried all that and still no go.
When I enable frame buffer and untick enable under selected element parameters, only the regular render saves and not the dirt pass. And when I render in the frame buffer and keep enable ticked under selected element parameters, neither the normal render or the dirt pass save.

Also a render in the frame buffer looks way to bright for some reason.
So frustrating.
