Directory Organization for Material Lib
show user profile  9krausec
Hey guys. Pretty straightforward question for you about organization.

I'm going to start archiving specific materials into material libraries for Vray (3ds max, maya, modo, compatible I'd like).

What would be the best way to do this? Is there a way to make a vray material, save to to some sort of generic library that can be processed by any 3d Software as long as it's running vray?

How do you folks organize your material assets?

EDIT: I'm preparing for buying a NAS system for storage and want all assets and finished projects archived on the NAS (DROBO).

textures directory for stone, grass, etc same layout as

material library for vray, mentalray, etc (each renderer).

I like saving .mat files - all my favourite materials together in 1 library. So when starting an archviz scene I have in my editor all the common materials: galv, steel, glass, chrome, brick, concrete etc in 1 library already in max.

Vray3 has a way of converting libraries between softwares this will be interesting

Thanks Donvella. I was looking at the way Vray converts materials from 3ds to Maya, guess it's not full proof as some materials (apparently) don't convert over properly.

Thanks man.
