Did you know that...?

Throw something in here if you think sharing knowledge is fun.
I'll start.
Did you know that if grey is surrounded by another color it gives the impression of being slightly tinted?
That phenomenon is called simultaneous contrast (source Betty Edwards, "Color")

If you leave Hydrogen for long enough, it starts to think about where it came from.

In ancient times the game of coin flipping wasn't the dumb thing it is now. It was closer to our poker game.
One player would throw the coin in the air, catch it with the same hand and slap it on the back of his other hand, the final position allowing him to check the coin without his opponent seing it while at the same time preventing any foul play.
Then he would announce 'heads' or 'tails' (or the latin equivalent) and the other player would have to guess if he's telling the truth only by studying his phisionomy.

Now look at my face and tell me: did I make that up?

Boiling water freezes faster than cold water if you put it in the freezer. Interestingly, no one knows why, and if you can work out why this happens there's a 1000 pound reward.

Why do we "call shotgun" to get the front seat in car?
Because a billion years ago, when a horse carriage would travel, one guy would hold the reins to steer the horses and the other guy would hold the shotgun to fend off the bandits.

did you know that people believe in almost everything that starts with "there has been a scientific study about"?
example:
"There has been a scientific study about how people believe in everything that starts with "there has been a scientific study about " "

Turbocharged cars are actually more efficient in terms of fuel economy, contrary to the general understanding that they are just more powerful..

I`m british, it`s 135-140p per litre here, we have to think about this shit.

herfst1, I heard about this I have a hunch its due to the elevated amount of air in the water once its boiled ;)

Did you know you can do the 9x tables with both hands up to 9x10 unless your missing a few digits :P Were going to count from left to right digit by digit. Hold your hands up infront of you palms facing you, put your left thumb down - thats 1x9 what fingers are left standing - 9? 2x9 put only your left index down, 1 being left of the finger down, 8 being the rest of your fingers - 18, 3x9 left middle finger down only, 2 on the left, 7 on the right - 27. Good one for the youngens ;)

Haha DonVella... I remember that one... Used to be the reason 9 is my favourite number...

Another factual fact about 9...

Any two multiples of 9 will return a value, that when, individually added together returns a multiple of 9 (ie. 9, 18, 27 etc)

Eg.

9*3 = 27
2+7 = 9

9*9 = 81
8+1 = 9

9*12 = 108
1+0+8 = 9

9*53 = 477
4+7+7 = 18
1+8 = 9

I'm sure someone more mathematical than myself can reason some cool things out of this. I just like it, and it'll let you work out if any number is a multiple of 9 simply by adding it's constituent parts together? No?

@ donvella. Interesting theory (relating to the water).

My theory has two parts:
1. The steam evaporating off the water creates turbulence in the air as it rises and then cools. Turbulence helps cool the water. Think of lying perfectly still in a pool or cold bath, you'll be perfectly warm until you move.

2. The molecular structure of the water is more dispersed and less uniform allowing the heat to be released faster.

My theory breaks down, though, once the water has cooled to the same level as the chilled water. But if we add your theory in at that point it might make sense.
