no sweat :) the final product is just simply a meshmooth with 2 iterations, you need to learn how to use chamfering correctly to get it looking right but it just comes with practice.
to use shapemerge, create the spline (i think it has to be closed but im not sure) then select your solid object go to the create panela nd choose compound objects instead of standard primitives. then click on shapemerge, this converts your object by colapsing the stack into a shapemerge format, in th modify panel click on choose spline (or whatever the button is called) then click on your spline. if things go well (and believe me its very temperamental) it wil cut into your shape the projected edges from the spline. im not too sure how but i think it may be the spline z axis that gets projected. worked very well on this example though :) have a go, its pretty useful sometimes. glad my efforts werent wasted :)
edit: nah dont bother using extrude, you'll have to boolean afterwards and that just ends up being messy.
edit edit: i just realised i forgot to chamfer the side edge to keep the base of the flat side sharp, but what the feck!

I actually noticed that you didnt harden (correct term?) that edge. But i figured you just forgot or didn't notice how flat it was. Either way I get the point :) I just needed a starting point, and I've actually been trying to figure out this crap all day, lol. So your efforts certainly were not wasted. Again thank you. When you chamfer your edges, and I'll probably ask you more questions when I'm ready to, do you select everything you want chamfered and chamfer at once, or do you do edge at a time? It effects the joints differently depending on the order, thats why I'm asking.

usually i tend to do a complete loop at a time, this lets you sort out the verts and tris as you go, but in this case (a rare one) i did do it all in one go but then there is still a big clean up operation to find them all and do welding, removing .etc, you inevitably miss a couple which crinkle your mesh when smoothed. but they are usually easily found and deal with
right sleeping time, its 00.45 :) catcha later

so i know i'm not the greatest 3d artist, but i'm pretty good at vector art (in this case splines)...
...but drawing splines in max sucks. the natural arch is a off, it's too flat. i'm just going to draw this spline in illustrator.. but if anyones got any thing to say about spline drawing in max let it be said!

i know i seemed to have taken over your thread again but ill give you another answer. i didnt need to use spline curves as such at all when making that front bit, just two circles (one for the top arc and one for the bottom arc) and then an almost 90° angle with two straight splines and filleted the corner vertex for the sides, then trimmed it all nice and neat

grotey i dont care what you take over! you've been sickly helpful and i appreciate it so much.
heres an example of what i'm talking about:
I basically did vector outlines in 3 different programs to illustrate what i'm talking about. I prefer PSP (paintshop pro) for vector drawing (though I know illustrator and Draw are more powerful vector programs). But PSP doesnt import into max, so i drew up the spline in Illustrator, then tried to import it in, but the max portion of the image below is my illustrator import.
Max like changes the angles of the curves... No clue why this is happening. This isn't something that's preventing me from moving forward, I could just do what you did and move on, but this is bothering me... Why can't i accurately make a 2D shape in max?!

i have to go to work, but another question...To make the shape like you did, do you overlay the lines an circles overtop of each other? cause I've done that, but that doesnt create verts at the intersections, so I can't trim it up "nice and neat" :)

I wouldn't have used splines at all, I probably would have started out with a cylinder and worked out the shape manually

*bump
anyone have any guess why max is changing the 2d shape of the vector outline i did in illustrator? anyone have any advice/tips/tricks for 2d spline shapes in max?

Have you tried using a bezier instead of a smooth. Smooth as it sound make a smoorth curving line instead of a a part of a circle like you would expect, but ya convert those verticies to beziers and adjust them a little till you get it how you like it.

Ohh, I'm not sure if your aim is to make a model of a real deagle model or just a model of your airsoft one but if its a real one this might help.

i'm not a big gun guy, but that completely looks like a colt 1911...?
actually thats a colt double eagle, not a isreal desert eagle
completely different gun! but thanks anyway, this guns pretty bad ass, maybe i'll model this one next!

THat link has almost all my Desert Eagle photos (none of them are mine, though some photos were taken by me) Should be a good source for references if you want to make the real one
And just for fun, one of my favorite pics of the DE in action (taken from some video)
