Alright so I've kinda tried to start this a couple of times now. Having problems. I'm again not sure where to start. I want to make sure I'm going about this the right way... So I'm asking for the forums help here.

I'm starting one piece at a time. I wanna do the barrel/front part of the gun first. I'm going to post some pictures I shot for reference. If any of you would be willing to show me what you think the best way to start this would be, please demonstrate.

Make sure you also have a lot of reference from the real steal since I'm sure you don't want to make a bb gun version.

I'd start with the front shape and work from there out. I did this model too as my third model in max, that was back then when I was 13 :P

honestly i dont care if i make the bb gun version or not. i just want to accurately reproduce this shape. i've been trying to work from the front part. but the issue i've been running into is that the base of this piece is an extruded cylinder, and I'm having trouble keeping that shape with the front part insanity.

mr.grotey I KNOW you wanna help me. please god help me. i feel like i only have control over these mechanical shapes using smoothing groups, and even still...i'm really slaugtering this..

Thing is the bb version has some bolts that the real thing doesn't have.
so for a training: yeah just go for it. But you'll end up mixing real vs bb... :P

anyway start with the front shape, then extrude, go to poly mode, add segments etc etc.

Back when I tried modelling, I came across this tutorial of a beretta by Ichi. I love the method of modelling he uses in it (even though there are better methods) I just seemed to like modelling in this way. Give it a try. Just follow along with him while you are watching the video.

actually this would be a good tutorial for the little click here too

thanks for the links guys.

catman: i watched the first video and will watch the rest in that beretta tutorial. very interesting. i want my gun to be more detailed and higher poly...i'm still going to watch this whole thing just to learn whatever i can because i'm a very visual learner (i hate reading)

but that said, if i wanted my model to be higher poly, would box modeling be the better route to go?

poopsmith: where on ghostrecocon's site are the gun modeling tutorials?? sometimes i have a problem finding things that are right infront my face...so help a brother out.

Ok you asked for it so here we go again ;)

1. draw out a spline to the shape of the front flat face adn extrude to the length of the barrel

2. select a lengh edge and ring the selection an select the lower faces.

3. exturde the faces by normal so they splay out.

4. keeping the same selection scale the faces in and down to match the base shape using the front view

5. as you wont be able to get the two new side faces to fade in exactly, select the three side faces in the pic and click on 'make planar' to flatten them out, at this point i will slice the model in half and use a symettry modifier so i only need to work on one side.

6. next remove the middle row of edges AND vertices to prepare for the next stage

7. select the lower row or edges or verts (doesnt matter) and rotate and pull them back to match the side ref. you must also line up the individual side vert further up (where the gizmo is in the picture)

8. next, onto the milling out section on the top, draw a closed spline shape of the flat surface and curved end using the side ref. this will be used in a shapemerge operation.

9. after converting the barrel into a shapemerge using the new spline, convert it back to an e-poly, delete the top faces, clone the open edges across to the center to close the gap. (here it is good to use the x,yand z buttons to flatten the edges out in one axis then align them to the center of your object) also because of the extra verts the shapmerge will add, you need to spend a little time cleaning up the edge by target welding. you will most probably not have exactly the same as me here but the principle is the same. notice the top littel faces on the curve create a 4-sded poly in a slightly different way to the others.

10. then to keep the polys 4-sided in ran 2 loops of edges around the 'belly' of the barrel and joined up the verts.

11. then i created the sight but ill just show a picture of that. cant do bloody everything for you! :p

12. then i spent a while chamfering, welding, collapsing cutting and so on to make the smoothing nice, but this is far to involved for a tut like this and just doing it to see what works best will be the best way, just remember, 4-sided all the way unless you really have to leave a 3 sided poly here and there.

any other help just yell :)

Grotey...THANK YOU!!!

I was just about to post a question, and i saw your sweet reply. You're the man, a grin instantly came to my face. The fact you've consistantly helped me... Completely awesome. How did you smooth the final product?

Also, the shape merge that you did, did you like extrude out the spline you did? i dont fully understand how you did that part.

@redturtle; use the "extrude" modifier on the spline :]
