Demo Reel Update
show user profile  herfst1
Hey, this is just an update of my 2015 reel, I chopped out the robot arm animation and now have a couple of planes from Flight School, just turntables. Check it out if you like. Cheers.

Looks like you've set the fade-out on the first plane to end a little soon, it pops back onto the screen afterwards.

The model of the girl has some super weird rendering artefacts in her hair. Seeing some major flickering.

The rally car bit looks super bad to me, like some majorly poor super-imposed model over a 2d background sort of bad. You've also got some weird screen flickering/tearing here. I would say to cut that piece a bit short, and instead start it where it's at the 1:04 mark, with the interior, as I think the exterior bit is the weakest thing in this reel by a bajillion miles.

Other than that, I quite like it!

Thanks for the feedback(s)

@ Ijzerman, I agree about the boring intro, I might start off with a snippet of in-game footage, can show off my pilots as well then as a bonus.

@ Dave, I'm not sure about the fade thing you mentioned, I don't see it (just rechecked).

Regarding the girl artifacts... yep, I hate them too. Trouble is hardware. It took roughly a week of 16 hours a day rendering just for those 20 seconds of footage, I really, desperately need to get a new job asap (don't want to be committed to another plane, which will take a couple of months; need to get out of Chatham), so I'm stuck with it for the present moment.

With the rally car, the tearing was on purpose (post production). Was hoping it could give the impression of the footage being taken with a dodgy camera as, yep, it's not great. It will hurt to kill it with fire but you do have a point. I'm torn.

But yeah, bring on the harsh feedback, that's what I thrive on. Cheers chaps.

Okay that's pretty weird, the plane popping back isn't happening now. I'm not going crazy!

16 hours to render that girl?
What are your rendering on and what engine are you using?

I have to agree, too slow.

I would add at least more particle on the outdoor car part and cut the rally cars in the garage(it's seem to weak compared to everything else) and make a cut straight to 1:21.

I got a laptop that overheats playing tetris.

Surprised you don't like the garage, that's one of my favourite parts. Then again, I'm all about the camera movements.

Camera movement isn't what your trying to show off, those cars and the materials of the garage are going to hurt you when AD's look at your reel.

Rebus :p ...can't you get render farm access via Dovetail ?

Demo looks ok, planes need more of a CG breakdown imho, texture layer build up's / overlays / wireframes / detail zooms etc.

Transitions between scenes wouldn't hurt either, needs more personality / style, zing, better cuts and overall story boarding.

All time related I know...when your always busy "that'll do" comes into effect ;)

I did find myself skipping thru the turnarounds as they were too slow and seeing 3 planes slowly isn't necessary, I like seeing 3 planes but you can switch between them much quicker, I would treat it as one spin sequence as far as timing goes.

If I needed to see the planes in more detail id rather just look at pics you may have posted on your website or sketchfab

But the quality is there for sure! and the rest of the reel was super enjoyable to watch, really creative presentation made it fun, well done for sure!!

I share the opinion of Dave.
For me it's a bit slow though. The camera work is kinda chopy at 1:28 for my taste.

By the way, I checked your portfolio and I'd like you to know, that on Internet Explorer, the gallery doesn't work quite right, that might be something to consider to change. To be specific, it loads the thumbnail pictures, but they are faded out a bit, and the big picture doesn't loads at all.
In google chrome works nicely though.

Also, generally the problem with Carbonmade is when you don't have enough content to make sense of categories, thus making them useless, silly, and one extra unnecessary click for your future employer to get to the awesomeness part.

Congrats, you found my signature.

Thank you for the comments. So, so harsh. So, so helpful. And cheers for the explorer bug flag Silard.

Anyway, thanks over, I updated the reel, made it "less boring" at the beginning.

Well it's definitely more interesting but only in the beginning, it's too long now. Also in the first minute we only se final products, potentially containing some stuff that isn't made by you, you should drop there a little text about what was your part in it. Also some breakdown would be cool. From 1:06 the FPS drops far below acceptable level, do you rush to submit your reel somewhere? Either that or you are lazy. I don't think people want to hire lazy people.

Just my two cents.

Congrats, you found my signature.

much better! I think I'd take out the "2015" "2016" split, usually you would only do that if you were showing off some sort of new technology that you learned. Put a constant music track under it and keep the whole thing under 2min, you're almost at 3min

The plane stuff and the racing stuff is really strong so if I were to do this here would be my edit.

Cut: I still don't think that first garage shot does you any good.

Start is with the rally car- insert in a lower third what it is you did, If you did it all list it out.

For the planes: show the rotation then the plane flying.
I'd cut the slow choppy plane

Then go into the mechanics that you have.

I'd also cut the people they don't seem to be helping and are weaker to you're other stuff.
Maybe when you show the guy in the plane also show off the guy, but that other guy in zbrush wont help you and the girl needs a line and clay render
