Crit my photography Please?
show user profile  Bryan C.
Well my professor this month got me to pick up my point-and-shoot and have a go. Started with some macro stuff and then snapped off a few shots of my cat Oscar (who is awesome btw). I'd really like some input from you shutter gurus on these if I could. All of these were taken on full manual with manual focus/exposer/fstop. I could get much closer on these if it would let me use the macro focus while I was zoomed in, but it limits me greatly as soon as I zoom in even a little. Anyways, on with the pics, ty for any help you guys can give me!

heatsink rulez. Cat is cute, however lacks contrast therefore making it not so interesting.

Hey Bryan, nice to see some photos from you! Here's my harshest crits.

First shot: Poorly focused. There is no real subject. The composition would be better if the heatsink didn't leave the frame on the left. Pulling back just a bit would have helped.

Second shot: The barrel distortion is quite bad. Not sure what to suggest for this one.

Third shot: I think the angle should be slightly higher, and a slightly smaller aperture used. The composition of this one is nice, very dynamic. (best composition of the lot)

Fourth shot: Better composition would be nice, and if you'd put a drop of blood on it, it would have been really interesting.

Fifth shot: The best of the lot. The eye is sharply in focus, which is a must. Composition could be more interesting. When something is looking out of the frame, extend the space on that side, to make the shot more dynamic.

Sixth shot: I like it, but you have fallen into the same trap as with some of the rest, and put the subject dead centre. Apply the rule of thirds to your shots for much more impact.

Overall, work on your focusing. Use a tripod of you can. I think you are slightly too close to get a sharp picture in the first few shots. Also, apply the rule of thirds, it really does make for better images. :o)

Nice to see your pictures. Your cat looks great!

I know next to nothing about photography,...so I can give an educated crit..

But, I like the first one alot,....seems interesting. The next few do seem to lack a proper focus,...and I love the cat!
The cat is awesome. Not necessarily the 'picture' of the cat,....but the cat itself.....;-)

Thanks guys :)

@Nik: Thanks for the rule of thirds link! Should help a lot :) I dont think my point and shoot lets me control aperature size? Or is that the F-Stop? Im still a bloody noob with a camera lol.

@Jim: Yes, the cat is the most awesome cat in the existence of cats, period.

I think it would be cool if you could get an extreme close-up (like the other pictures) of your cat's eye.
But that would probably be a very difficult shot to get.

It would be, in order to get as close as I did, I literally had the lense of the camera touching the object I was trying to shoot, somehow I dont think that cat would appreciate a camera lense on his eyeball lol xD

Yeah, that's what I thought. There were so many times I'd be laying or sitting eye level with my cat, with the sunlight shining in his eyes and I thought how cool a closeup shot of a cat's eye would be.

You could do it with a telescopic lense with manual focus, just zoom in and adjust the focus, but with a point and shoot, its not gonna happen.

A little trick I use when doing close-up / macro shots with a digital to improve DOF. Use the highest resolution the camera provides. Stand back from the subject so that it only fills a third to a half of the frame. Crop the picture to frame the subject better. (rule of thirds).

This is no substitute for tripods and long exposures. Nor does it help if you are going to make large prints. But for hand held shoots of opportunity it helps with the DOF a bit.

Like the cat eyes ... Good shots for a point and shoot.

picked up a cheap tripod today, it helps but Im not too impressed, as its plastic it flexes when I press the shutter button, so some of my images still turn out blurry, but all in all its ok for $20 inc/tax at walmart.

Here's a shot I fired off testing it out, lemme know what you think:

when you use the tripod, use the built in timer, so your button wobble doesn't be a problem.

Thanks nik I hadnt thought of that! Im such a noob lol.

Here's a couple more I shot trying to play around with sepia to take color out of the equation just to get used to the rule of thirds and framing:
