creating a rounded extrude?
show user profile  drPHK

I am using the star tool to make a 16 point sun. The problem is, when I extrude the sun, it makes a 3d image that is boxy.

Is there anyway to make the extrude rounded?

Perhaps what you're looking for is "Bevel"

Try extruding as normal, and then chamfering all the edges that were extruded. I don't fully understand what you're after. But chamfering usually results in more curvy meshes.

i think you want something like this:

extended primitives -> hedra -> star2 -> set p=0 q=1

you can build up something similar out of an geosphere-primitive too.

greetings, U.

I don't have anywhere to upload a picture to, sorry.

What I did was create a basic star, then I added 16 points to turn it into a sun.

When I extrude and/or bevel to about 17 and rotate the sun to its side, the suns points are very flat. They kinda look like a door stopper or a bike ramp. I'm wanting them to look more like a cone or cylender.

drPHK, you might want to take a look at the FAQ on posting images. It will be a lot easier to help you if people see what you're working on.

try a 16 sided cylinder. extrude all the side pollies (by polygon). scale the ends. add a turbosmooth.
if im following you :/

Ok, I'm in the editable poly area with a cylinder. How would I extrude all the side pollies? and scale to ends? :)

One very quick way of doing this is:

Create your 16 point star spline
Then create a smal half-circle spline
Then add a shell modifier to the star, tick the 'Bevel Edges' box and add the arc spline to the box below it. This bevels the sides of the extrusion based on the shape of the arc,

You may need to add an edit spline modifier to the arc spline and rotate it round at 'spline' subobject level to get the radius on the star facing the right way but it comes out quite nicely...

go to polygon sub-object mode
select all side pollies.
click the extrude:

choose "by polygon"
