hi let me set the scene,
i have to animate a scene where a boat is being pulled out of a dock using a tug boat but is also fixed back to land with winches.
The winch wires that connect the boat to land need to have a variable length so that when the boat is pulled away from the land the winch wire length is increased
many thanks for reading

a renderable line with dummies attached to each end and linked to the boat on one end and the winch on the other.
it all depends on what you want the rope to do when it's being pulled. how tight will the rope be. will it have some slack and hang down, or will it be a tight rope. Do you want to be able to see the rope being unwinded off the winch?

I would try renderable splines, just 2 end verts and linked x form each end to dummies, so that if you need to animate sag in the ropes, you can do so with the dummies.
