creating objects

i recently decided to try to model a bag,
but i realised i have no idea how to even begin modeling it. so my question is how do you guys figure out what starting shape you begin modeling from? do you keep trying half random ideas untill one works or do you just look at objects and see right away how to begin your modeling process

Probably start with a box with many segments and add a noise mod.

But as for your deeper, overall question...we all ask Grotey of course.

try to see objects as a series of primitives- so a fat, short cylinder for most of it, half a sphere for the top and another cylinder as the tie and refine from there
you don't have to use seperate objects to make it up- just keep in mind the masses and then cut in the details
