Creating cigarette time lapse

Hello. I figured it was about time for me to start doing some work, so, for a class assignment I decided to try and create a timelapsed burning cigarette for a splash screen for a flash Ecard.

This is something I have never done, so I wanted to make a starting post to share how I plan to go about doing it (in a general sense). I am going to be using phoenixFD for the burning and smoke.

I am mainly figured I would rely on materals for this one, using an animated falloff map inside of the vray blend materal to mask the change of unburnt cig, to burning cig, to burnt cig.

I was then going to try to somehow implement Garps Verona (spelling) fracture script to show some imerging cracks in the ash, and then eventually have bits of the ash fall off the cig using space warps w/ a particle system of such.. After rendering the animation to AVI with a embedded alpha channel, I would then import it into flash.


Does it sound like I am looking at this from the right direction? I know there are a lot of holes in my theory about how I want to go about doing this, but in general, is this way dooable?

I'd post an example but youtube seems to be getting a face lift and not working the best.

I would do it in AE.
You can model the elements in max.

would you recommend doing the burn in AE too? I am not familiar with AE too much, but I am sure you are taking about an animated mask of such over the elements that I will create in 3ds?

Wow... This tutorial is awesome.. After some tweaking I was able to get an effect extremely close to what I wanted to get..

I have pretty much NO AE experience so I was pretty happy with myself to tweak this tutorial so much (I learned a shit ton and will be visiting copilot much much more)..

Now my next step is to animate the cigs ash in 3ds max, import it into AE and create a mask that reveals the ash (animated and falling)..

So, that sounds like it will be challenging, but I'm excited to give it a twirl... Also, I might try adding more of a smoke effect, I don't know, this is only for a splash screen on a flash assignment that I need to have done and haven't started (been procrastinating with fun work, haha)...

yeah, for sure.. I am doing that in 3ds right now.. Going to use Garps Fracture script for it.. Then I'm going to animate it, render it out with alpha, and the splice it into AE with a mask.. (I'll post the finished product in a hour hopefully).. I'm crawling with this AE stuff right now.

I know it looks stupid and not realistic, but I think I'm done.. I need to start the actual flash assignment.. haha.

Don't give up, you're almost there!
You need to have the ash part shrink a little more, bend a little with some irregularities (an FFD maybe?), give it a slight bump or displacement to make the surface look chipped (noise with high and low value close to each other) and have 3 or 4 bits that fall in the process.

AHH! NO!! Your words are compelling... I tried your script out (fracture), "f"in awesome dude! We'll see how much time I have on my hands..

I really shouldn't of even of done this for the flash assignment (wasn't required, but I try to put 3d into stuff whenever I can for school).

After I get everything done with flash and Actionscript, then I might come back to this, but I still have about 13 hours to go on the flash bit..
