Creating characters in 3ds max 2012
show user profile  medhead99
I'm going through tutorials to learn how to create character rigs using CAT but I can't seem to find any tutorials on creating the characters themselves.

I understand how to create the rigs and perform some animation and morphing, but how do I create a human-looking character to control with the rig? What about clothing or other wearable accessories?

If anyone can point me in the right direction to get me started, that would help a lot. If anyone has any links to tutorials on this, that would be even better.

Thanks everyone

I think what you want, is to look up tutorials on general modelling.

You build the characters, they are not generated.

Another option is to go somewhere like The3dStudio or TurboSquid and purchase/freely download a character model that someone has made, and just rig that.

The usual process goes like...

- Build a character (including unwrapping/texturing)
- Build a rig inside the character
- Skin the rig to the character (this is often not an easy task)
- Animate the rig

For clothes and the like, there are numerous options, and it always depends on your desired end result. You could simulate realistic clothing that you've modelled with the cloth modifier or you could go the route of just having it deform when the character deforms (ie, included in the rig and skin)

These are all vague words... you're asking to do something quite big, and comparing it to the ease of creating a CAT rig is the wrong way to think about it.

Thanks for the posts. These will help me a lot.

I figured it wasn't an easy process. Just needed some good starting points and some general info on the methods and terminology.

I appreciate it.
