Creating A Hat?
show user profile  geebs2006
I'm trying to create a hat that resembles something like this without ribbon and feather:
http://www.villagehatshop.com/biltmore_homburg.html

It has to be done from a cylinder of radius 0.3m and height 0.001m and be done using the FFD operators. I'm having trouble using FFD - has anyone got any tips because its driving me crazy?

hmm why does it have to be made with the ffd mod, im thinking this will be really hard to do considering the cylinder caps polys and how they are laid down
why cant you just poly model it (boxmodel)??

you could poly model this from a cylinder, but not using fdd imo

as for the size, change your bloody unit setup, you are going to get all manner of clipping issues if you are working on something 0.001m tall

Its a uni coursework - have to use sizes given and wants us to use FFD - none of us understand why because we haven't done anything on FFD

there is no reason why you should be using those scales. fdd doesn't require specific scales as the effect will be the same at any. your life will simply be easier at a larger scale.

actually, if you aren't allowed to convert your cylinder to an epoly or anything to edit, then you might as well use those measurements and then scale it up 1000% dont worry, it will make it bigger and easier to work with, but it wont actually change the size of the object displayed on the right as the radius and other info for the object is checked by max before the transform scale and rotate operators are applied (can be fixed by resetting the xform)

anyway, i still dont think you can get that top part of the hat shape using a cylinder and fdd as the top of the cylinder is all triangles forming a point in the center. you might have more luck increasing the cap segments

If you DO manage to get something even remotely like that hat with only FFD, I would like to see that mesh uncolapsed.

How are you supposed to extrude the....well the extruded round part haha whatever it's called, with only ffd?

*tut* grotey to the rescue again :p

its very possible, i did this in a couple of minutes and ive never ever used an FFD before.

ive posted up my FFD mesh too so you can reference from it, hope it helps. taught me something new :)

Obviously once you start you are limited by how many sections you have in the FFD mesh so choose wisely. i chose 6 radial rings first and it wasnt enough to make the dip in the middle a decenmt shape but 7 worked nice. the outside shape would be improved with more than 6 sides but you can sod about with that yourself :)
