How would you guys go about creating something like this?

debris maker 2 would be cool for this... I think. Haven't given it a whirl, just seen the demo.

Pretty easy to set up by combining some procedual maps into displacement(tile, smoke) however with MR displacement engine being as it is, takes friggin forever to render.

wow, that's impressive Strat... I've used VRay displacement and getting some acceptable results. Cheers for the input guys.

vray displacement is good to a point, but to get results like you're after you really need to create a displaced mesh.

Sometimes the simple and tedius solution we avoid is the quickest and best in the end.
Just throwing it out there... depends on if you just need to get it done or want to learn new methods and spend the time figuring the tech puzzle out.
But you could do this manualy by adding a lot of segments and extruding like mad, you do a chunk than you copy it around and extrude a bit more to keep the randomness factor.
