copying westcoast's signature
show user profile  parkerfamily
out of boredom i've decided to see how many of the signatures on here i can make myself in max. it seems like it would be a good way to learn individual techniques, so westcoast's is a bullet with westcoast13 engraved on it, and my question is, how do i mesh the text to the rectangle so it will bend well? my plan is to merge the text with the rectangle, add a shell modifier, add a 360 degree bend modifier. how can i make this work?

You're kinda slow to notice things... Westcoast13 hasn't used that sig in a long while.

Bend won't work as you already found out. Try cylinder + text with shapemerge.

Timo

Use displacement for the text, don't bother with modeling it

"...a good way to learn individual techniques..."

Let him model the text. He will benefit from it at later stages. There are many situations in which displacement won't work.

last time i tried to sink text like this i tried to do it other ways first but i resorted to boolean and it worked perfectly, not the recommended way but it did the trick for me.

what a great idea, that's saved me thinking up my own sig.

>>"He will benefit from it at later stages."

Using that logic you should model your first car using patches and paint deformation because you might benefit from it later? No.

Surely the best way is to learn the best way to do the current task? you can cross other bridges when you come to them. Displacement will benefit him in later stages just as modeling would and its a far quicker and later-adjustable method for this model.

Agreed. Also, if you intend to use your 3d skills for work, the quickest method (providing the results are acceptable) is always the best method.

I work for a company called Semcon Informatic Graphic Solutions.

Search carefully and you'll find a cheesy photo of me, and there are a couple of images that some of you might recognise from here on there too! :)
