| converting video (mp4) to frame sequences? (tga?) |
Error404 |
So, I've got a little video camera, and I'd like to convert the video files into a frame sequences so I can play with color correcting and other stuff in a compositing program (color correcting sucks in Vegas, hah!). I've got Vegas, but I can't seem to find any way to convert it to frame sequences.
Any of yall do that? how do you do it?

If you have a copy of quicktime pro you can use that.
If not there is a free app called virtualdub which if I recall can also render to image sequences.
http://www.virtualdub.org/
forgot virtualdub doesn't support mp4 so you may needhttp://sourceforge.net/projects/mp4cam2avi/ to get it in.

If you have Adobe premier you can export your clip as filmstrip (.flm) and open this in Photoshop. It will now be a single huge image with all the little frames next to each other and then edit them as frame level of apply a color corection to the entire strip.
Sadly Vegas can't export to filmstrip. I have long searched for a way to convert from Vegas to filmstrip as Premier can't read my m2t files.
Its never easy is it?

yes, vegas does have a script, but it has no options as to what size image it outputs. my footage is HD, and so is the project, but it still outputs things 640px wide or there abouts.
I don't have quicktime pro, is that the one that's like $20 or so? I should just pick that up anyway.

my fault, I guess vegas does export it at the project size, i just quickly threw the footage in there and didn't set the project size. It's slow as crap though, exporting png files, hah! I'll give quicktime a shot.

You can load mp4's directly in vDub with an input plugin found here:

Just thought that I would close this post by doing a test and it seem that the "Render Image Sequence" script in Vegas render its output to the PREVIEW setting and not the project setting. So its important to set your preview to the desired output size and quality.
Other than it being slow as d**k it works fine and its easy to import the sequence back into vegas as long as you remember only to select the first image. The rest of the files will automatically follow.
