How to Convert Particle System to Polygon Mesh?

Howdy. Ive created a tree trunk with branches and then i have attached 20,000 leaves using the particle system to the branches of the tree. It seems as if there is far too many leaves for the render to handle even 1 image using the particle system so i would like to convert it all to polygons.

I have attempted to snapshot the tree, although the leaves dont come along with the snapshot, only the trunk and branches. I have tried selecting everything in the scene and converting to polygons, however this does not work either. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

I was going to just render it as a 2D image with an alpha and just create 2 planes intersecting as a tree to limit it to 2 polygons, but even that wont work since i cant render 1 image.

Render machine is dual 3ghz, 2gb ram, 512mb 8800GTX. Still wont render 1 image, max will crash.

Any ideas someone?

Press F1 and look up Scatter. Works great for putting leaves on a tree.

To turn a particle system into a mesh use the 'Mesher' compound object

thanks for your help, but still no success.

I attempted to change it into a mesh object, however it then creates a mesher object which i cannot turn into an editable poly. I cant seem to snapshot it, max crashes, and when i have created it (which slows down by x2) when i hide the particle system the mesher dissapears too.

Any more ideas?

Are you sure you are doing it right? I dont see why you cant turn it into an e-poly, thats what the mesher object is for.

go compound objects
click 'mesher'
drag the mesher object in the viewport
align it to the particle source object
select the mesher icon object
go to the modifiy panel
click the 'None' box under the 'Pick Object' heading
click the particle object
with the new mesher clone selected right click-->convert to editable poly


is that how you did it? works fine fore me.

the reaon you are getting crashes may be to do with there being too many particles? 20k isnt very high but for a test try using 2000 instead.

yes, that is how i used the mesher. after i right clicked and changed it into a poly, i had the editable poly functions but it was still a mesher object under the modifier stack, which was slowing down my scene dramatically. it seem to keep the particle system information.

I attempted to do the mesher as a test first using 20 leaves instead but some reason the particle system seems to be crashing my scene over and over, not to mention the massive slow down. When i tested it using 20 leaves, the moment the mesher is created and the particle system is selected under "pick object" it takes up to 20 minutes to right click and convert to poly, after i converted it i got the problems i spoke about above.

Any other solutions?
