Compositing, Render passes and Transparency

I would like to know if the following is possible, and if so, how to go about achieving the effect.

Example - I have an object shaped like a plastic lid from an aerosol can and it has a clear-ish plastic material that looks nice and even distorts the appearance of objects behind it (much like in real life)

I have this object sitting on a plane, with a background plate applied, so when I render, it looks like it is sitting on a desk. The plastic lid distorts the background image, again, an expected result.

However, I wish to composite the image in post-production using seperate passes. But, I cannot see how I can render the plastic lid with the distorted backplate behind it (that is, not to render out the plane with the mapped backplate)

When I tried, I simply got an image with some opacity, that could be layed over the top of the original backplate, but obviously, it wouldnt distort it.

Any ideas?

thanks in advance!
