How to compliment character model materials?

I want to add somewhat of a glossyness to my character maps, I took the time to model, UV and texture it; but now I want to put the cherry on the sunday so to speak. I want to add a flair of proffetionalism and I can't stand the normal shader for it; looks to crappy since I am rendering the whole thing in mental ray.

Here is what it looks like, all I have is a bump map and texture UV map; I want something that really compliments it; and I can't find any resource that is specifically under that subject.

So take your UV template to photoshop and get painting.. or get a good photo of a hand and manipulate to fit your UV's.

heh, not exactly what I meant. That was a glove, looked decent with a normal map generated with Z-brush. I meant kind of a glow, kind of like the characters in oblivian lol; high standard to live up to but it be nice to have that to some degree.

most glow/bloom is added in post for games it depends on the engine.
