rather complex robot arm animation
show user profile  Guillaume80
Hi all,

I'm trying to animate a robot arm. the child/parent hierarchy is done ( 1 > 2 >... > 8), if i want to, i can rotate every single object and the animation will work, but it's way to much time consuming. What i'd like to do is being able to move the 8th object and every single parent animated object would behave according to their freedom of rotation (for instance object 6 can only rotate on z axis, object 7 can rotate on x axis in a certain "float limit", and can rotate on z axis IF these obects are aligned).

How can i do this please ?

I'd use handles.

1. Make some dummy's and align them up to each pivot point.
2. Make some circles and align them up to each dummy.
3. Link each bone to each corresponding dummy, and each dummy to each corresponding circle.
4. axis constrain each circle to your desired rotation (x,y or z).

It won't make much difference, just easier to animate using handles.

But then you can make a rollout and use wire parameters and reaction controls to do cool stuff.

I think you want the IK solver.

The trouble with using IK for this model is making sure the joints are rotating in the right direction. If it's for a short animation I would just avoid all that and do it manually.

I would use the wire perimeter connections and link it to sliders
