What is the best way to combine an animation with footage i have taken from a camera?

I am making a video for school and i want to use 3Ds max for some of the special effects. How do i make the animations realistically react with the environment from my real footage. things like putting film grain on the animation, adding shadows, that sort of thing. i want the animation and the film to blend together well. suggestions?

The biggest and most avoidable mistake people make is NOT downgrading their animation to look like the lower quality video footage. Video shot from a home video camera usually has a lot of lighting problems, it's not completely level, etc. Mirroring these imperfections using color correction tools in your video editor of choice is a relatively easy way to make the two look like they belong together.
