clothing question
show user profile  stevey2shoes
I'm trying hard to make my first character.
One thing I need to know, i suppose before I finish modelling this section is how would you model and then animate movement in clothing, I'm just talking the bottoms of trousers moving with a walk cycle.
Part of me says model the trousers separately then use the cloth modifier, but this would involve modelling the legs separately as a collision object right?. I also get the feeling that cloth would give me no end of excuses/ headaches.
The only other way I can think is to model the trousers as part of the main mesh, and use morpher to flip between different poses of trouser position,
So how would you do it?

I suggest you make your life easy and don't worry about clothing animations. Just make the clothes, delete any body parts hidden by the clothes and skin and rig as normally.

I've only tried clothing animations once and found it a lot of tweaking. For instance you have to hook the trousers to stop them from falling around the model's ankles. You have to give enough padding to make sure the skin doesn't poke through. You have to choose the right parameters to mimic the right type of clothing. Then once you've done all that you have to bake in an animation. Looks great when you get it right but it all depends on what you're trying to achieve. If you're trying to make a low poly game model then don't bother. If you're trying to make a realistic animation then do bother.

I do it the same way you're thinking about it. If the cloth noticeably deforms ( like mc hammer windbreaker bell-bottoms would) I use cloth, other than that, skin + skin morph. I haven't had to use cloth for pants yet... I imagine that will be a lot of trouble, especially if you have anything other than a walk cycle.

why trouble? using cloth is not hard at all...

just make your legs, make your throusers, use legs as collision objects, use cloth on throusers, link the throusers to the legs, make a group on the parts that you dont want simulation on and want to follow the body as a preserve group and then run the simulation.

if the legs are not to be seen then you dont need to model them, just use some cylinders and then delete them after the simulation.

Hello there
