cloning sub-objects in place in max 2012
show user profile  Garp
I come from max 9 so I don't know if this has been changed just in the latest version or in a previous one.
Anyway, I find it really annoying.

So, there's the well-known shift-drag, with a transform mode active, that clones the geometry.
There's also the shift-click, still in transform mode, that clones in place this time.

In max 2012, both work as expected when cloning an object. But not so at a sub-object level!
I can still shift-move polys and make new objects or elements but if I shift-click nothing happens. I have to shift-move, then snap it back into position. Or detach as clone, then reattach.
Lots of clicks for what used to be a one-click operation. It becomes quickly tedious when you need many matching polys.

Does anyone know if it's possible to go back to the old behavior? Or maybe it's still there be done differently?

Shift-Click is now a quick command for selecting loops.
For example, select a face, then shift-click the face next to it and max will loop-select the faces along that direction. Same goes for edges and verts.

I meant sub-objects, like a selection of polys.
Right-click > clone, ctrl-v or shift-click work only at the object level (if used at a sub-object level it still clones the whole object).
Shift-click used to work at sub-object levels too, cloning the current sub-object selection, but not anymore. :(
Now it's used for loop selection but nothing has replaced it for cloning sub-objects in place.

ah yeah, hmm yeah looks like you cant do it :( I've always wanted the same options for sub-objects as for top level clones, i.e. why can I only have one clone of the element? I want 5 evenly spaced dammit!

Apart from adding the old polyboost tools and renaming them 'graphite', the modeling part of max has not really improved, has it?
