For people who have been to school may it be online or behind a desk what would be a good start for classes. I live in the US.

if you're attending a university or accredited school digitaltutors should be free for you. Start there, then check out thegnomonworkshop

Lynda.com is also a decent site

Also Buy the book 3ds max bible produced by wiley. its only about $60 bucks. This book is crazy efficient and gets you up and running from page 1. (don't be intimidated by the size - just open it and read a random page, you'll see).

I can vouch for lynda.coms tutorials.
I'm very funny about my tutorials, but they seem to have about 4 different teachers for their MAX tutorials.
I watched the character modelling tut back to back, he seemed to go at just the right speed for me, to the point where I would second guess what he was about to say and do next, which is proof positive his teaching got through my barriers :-)
Ironically the man that does most of the MAX tuts on there seems to gloss over stuff, which is ok if you're NOT a beginner like me but, as I am a beginner, hearing him say do this, now do this now do that, all as if its one sentence without any gaps grinds me down, but then to be fair to him, if he left gaps, he'd have to make twice the amount of videos.
worth a look though,
Steve

@digital3ds- umm.. I'm going to a University in the States and the only thing I could find is a 10% discount for students on Digital Tutors? Perhaps you mean if you go to a university you should see if your school is subscribed to Digital Tutors (I know we are with Lynda).

Just checking because I am looking at a few tuts on there (more specifically, the very nice looking car rgging tutorial on there) and don't want to drop the 45 bucks for a month if I don't have to.

@Dave: Uh.... First off should you be responding to devildog? Secondly it's a fantastic book that breaks max down and gives first rate examples, metaphors and descriptions to help the novice user. 3rdly I'm a vet max user 12yrs and running and have used f1 max help since day one. Long enough to know its not the best resource for beginners out there. Especially if your lacking in general terminology!

I digress - I too can testify to Linda.com tuts also try tutorialized.com.

actually I agree with Dave, I bought the max 9 bible and didn't find it much different from the stock tutorials. Easier to read I guess.

He who says it cannot be done is interrupting the man doing it.

Thank you for all your help! My company has lynda.com but I have not been on the site because they block out videos and some web site.
