Chinese Hand Fan

So, how would you go about modelling this with enough accuracy to allow for animation / rigging?

I've modelled it using the array tool and then roughly placing the 'folded-papery'-fan-piece over the top. Looks fine for a prop lying on a table for example. But I'm curious as to what mind-boggling methods you would use (cloth? I presume?) to create an animated version.

skin modifier with some invisible ik to create "bones" to weight into the folds.

edit: cloth requires simulation time, whereas skin mod flexible mesh calculations are much faster.
skin mod is also supported by most game engines. this may or may not be a concern.

I know how to do it.. I don't know how to explain it...

skin it and make cloth groups for the cloth parts that are not glued to the fan..

My issue is the angle at which the 'wooden' pieces glue onto the 'fan' piece at.

They're rotated almost 45 degrees where they attach to the 'cloth/fan piece'. But are relatively flat where the 'metal pin' holding thing is.

are you having trouble doing the wooden pieces or placing the cloth on it?

after doing this:

just make a plane and move the vets manually placing them on top of the pieces.

I made 10 pieces so it is 20 faces on the plane.

after placing it as close as posible let it simulate once so the cloth drops on the mesh and then make the correspondent groups and stick the cloth to your fan sticks.
