Yea i tried messing around with the concept a little bit.. couldn't get it just right though... i'd try drawing the shape you need with a helix and combination of other splines. It looks like you'd want two helix's, offset one of them in the z direction by the diameter of the circle being lofted i think. Or else, you could try creating the loft, then deforming it by adding a twist in the deform parameters..

I know i would use loft but how could i make splines like that. Anyone wanna wip up a tutorial. It be great. And what do you think of the chairs.

or if it is just a still
why not a plane with an opacity map?

Nah i got to model it, it wouldn't look good from a side view. Thanks kevin.

who cares about a side view if it is a still
you just turn it to face the camera
maybe i am confused but you said a still
are you doing a fly through of the room or something?
i am trying to understand why i would be looking at the side of this
and if you do insist on modeling
lathe it with splines
one for shape, one for path
lots of verts so you cna get the twist
or make a renderable spline, lots of segments
put a twist modifier on it
convert to poly
add a bend
convert to poly
model the head piece out of a flat spline
extrude it
convert to poly
attach the two together

I just did this with Helix and adjusting the spline. Then lofting it. Try that click.

Hm, I was able to get pretty similar models using only objects like cylinders or boxes and the twist modifier.. gotta make sure you have enough height segments for the twist though.

One thing to notice about these is the way they were created... the middle one, for instance, was made with a separate piece of iron for the handle and another piece for the rest of the tool. The handle is a heated up piece of roundstock twisted together with itself to form the handle, leaving a loop at the top. The bottom part of it was probably welded on. The one on the right looks to be a piece of square stock that was split at the top and then twisted, may also be two separate pieces... modeling these you'd want to take that into account, or just do your best to come up with your own design.

I don't have to model it but i got to learn to do this sometime, so i will try all your suggestions.

The tool handes look interesting so I thought Id have a go at them, here's the fruits of my labour

Left Handle: draw spline the shape of handle, draw circle, extude along spline using edit poly (and about 75 segments), add taper, and also change the taper curve figure to get the correct thickness near the top.

Middle Handle: draw circle in line with the vertical bar, extrude down, create two helixes to finish at same height and edit the vertices to converge at the bottom. Create a single coil helix for the loop at the top so the two ends roughly meet the two end of the handle, attach the three splines together and sod about welding and positioning the joins so they create a smooth transition from one helix to the next, extrude a cirle along the spline using edit poly, attach to the extruded circle at the bottom.

Right Handle: Since the twisted part has a groove running down each face you need to draw a plane that has 4x4 segments in it and scale down the central faces to the thickness you want the groove to be. grab the central vertex on each edge and scale inwards, extrude the faces to the length of the twisted part (i used about 60 height segments for this so the twist would look nice afterwards), apply the twist modifier and apply the desired angle. Draw a spline for the curly top and extrude a circle just like in the left handle and increasing the height segments appropriately). create a square box at the bottom for the bar and attach/weld the elements together.

very nice mike
a little texture and i am sold enouth texture work and you may even be able to zoom in on them
i don't know why but it could be done
how long?

nice work
needs texture
should unwrap so he can do close ups?
how long did it take?
ten minutes, twenty minutes?
soory it was around four in the morning when i posted that
little blurry eyed

Waw :-O How come I missed this imense thread?

The last scene looks nice :) It has a Sherlock Holmes look and with a few props (Don't forget one of those antique watches like in The beauty and the beast) on the fireplace and some lighter lighting it would look first class :) Also a worn dark red carpet with tiling texture and white-yellow edges. And the designs you choose for those fire sticks are perfect. Keep it up click :)

See you later Wally gator

YOUR MY HERO MR. GROTEY. THANKS!!!! Now i just have to do it. heheheh.

EDIT: oh and why in my last pic does the leg of the table seem to be floating. When i know for a fact that its acctually somewhat in the floor. Possibly something to do with the fireplace lighting?

Okay big problem going on for me with the middle tool. So i create the spline for it and now when i am extruding along the spline i have to make like 900 divisions for it to be smooth. So i tried loft but that ended up giving me 80,000 polygons to be smooth. So how the heck am i supposed to do this? Did your have like a ton of polygons making it up. If so then i will have to do another design.
