Character Studio: Key setting

Hello im currently tyring to do an animation test in Max, im using a Bi-ped set-up by some one else and using character studio for my animation.
Ive been animating for hours, and now ive come to a point where i want to animate individual sections of the model, but when I say key spine 1, its also keying spine 2,3 and everything else in the bi-ped which it wasnt doing early, any ideas

In cs, I think the bones are built that way. Cannot remember exactly which bones make a key frame on other bones but it is generally following the hierarchy.

If you happen to make a key frame on a finger bone and move it, the bicep/forearm/hand bones will have a key as well even if you don't animate it.
