can anybody tell me what the equivalent of photometric target area would be in max 2009? because i want to be able to do this tutorial.

i got it working fine with photometric free lights. just wondered if the "area" part meant anything thanks. just going to finish tweaking the caustic light now and then i'll post my render.
edit:g2g to school and the renders take like an hour because of 950k photons, will post final render in 6 hours

It means area. ie, light is emitted from an area, not a point.

first image is normal, the second is what i did accidentally by applying the glass material to the ball and the room.
edit:thanks bobby. will try that on the next lighting tut i do, i'm doing lots this weekend and lights seem to be the largest easy to improve part of max.

What the tutorial is asking for is a photometric target light (easy enough) and then you turn shadows to raytrace and go down the emitter settings and change it to an area
play around with the photon settings to control the effect
