Hi all,

What is the best and most realistic way of creating a material for car paint?

Ive played about with the default car paint in max, but doesnt look that great. Any pointers?

car paint can be a tricky bitch.

the best way to go about it is in a realistic manner; ie paint is built in layers... you start with a base coat, then maybe a candy color coat or a slight metallic, and then a clear coat.

how that gets achieved varies from render system to render system.

in max you can use composit and blend materials, in vray you use vrayblendmtl's, in others you use other stuff.

it also depends on what sort of paint your after, silver is just about the toughest to get right as it's a balance of the flake paint that's the base and the clear on top to give you the hard reflections.

one of the easiest is black, but with every paint there's also things you can put in to make it as realistic as possible like orange peel (the effect of a very slight rippling usually found in most mass manufactured cars).

and then of course is the environment that the paint sits in, if it's not primo or has potential you could have the best paint set up in the world and it would mean nothing.

so with all that being said, give us more details.

cheers for the response bots and grotey. was hoping u'd repy bolts, seen some of ur car renders and there quality!!

Im using MR in max 2009. The car is in a studio environment i set up frm a tut i found on here.
The paint needs to be red. I havnt used blend mats before, so would be a good learning point. i'll check out the inks n let ya know how i get on.

ok so ive set my scene up, paints ok not great think illl come back to it later. just wondering what if any exposure settings is best for a car render using mr. I'm using a studio set up frm the tut mentions, using 5 mr area lights and bounce cards.cheers

did you try the mentalRay "car paint Mat(mi)" shader when you click on the Standard button in a new material? Might be what you are after.
